I have not seen any pictures of the actual firearm used.

Since it was used to assault him, I guess that means the media can say he was killed with an assault rifle then eh?

The gunman was said to have held it illegally and did not have a licence. How could this be?

What those in various circles used to call the “K-mart special”.
Back in the day, one could go to the sporting goods section at
K-mart, and get a $49.99 .22 bolt action or a breech load shotgun of dubious quality. One would then proceed to saw off the barrel and stock, and add an improvised pistol grip.
Not that I’ve ever participated in this highly illegal activity of course, nor would I condone such an endeavor.

The theme here is that the criminal always finds a way.
This should become obvious to those whose minds are not made up.

the sawn off rifle was very common in our early history. The pistol was usually a sawn off musket. They were called blanket guns and were very lethal, way beyond .357 mag. They frequently were .60 caliber and larger.

I remember the different state and local police/sheriff exhibits of long ago that included cut-down longarms they had confiscated. There always seemed to be a .22 rifle or two that had fallen in with hard times and bad company.
My late F-I-L came from a family that had to "make it do, wear it out, use it up or go without," and some of his elderly relatives would extend the lives of decrepit single-shot shotguns by sawing off the barrel behind a muzzle that had become damaged or a barrel that had bulged. Sometimes it would be an inch or so, and a few of them got trimmed back more than once, but in any event, they ended up with some barrels that weren't so well balanced and which patterned like a donut
but none were so short to be illegal or so short/light to make them too hard-kicking.
I suspect that they all basically fell apart much like the one hoss shay: by the time the barrel needed to be whacked down below 20" or so, they weren't safe to use at all and got thrown into a ravine along with the other possessions that were no longer worth fooling with.

The Sun in the United Kingdom has reported that the firearm used in the murder of MP Jo Cox was a sawed off .22 rifle. The picture above is an example of a .22 sawed off rifle that was found in Australia. From thesun.co.uk: . ... '
Last night a source said the gun used to kill married mum-of-two Jo, 41, was a sawn-off .22 rifle.
The gunman was said to have held it illegally and did not have a licence. Pity she wasn't considered trustworthy enough to carry a weapon with which she might have defended her own life and that of others. Drug user or a criminal record, I suppose.

I have somewhere an old article from TRUE Magazine from 1966 about criminals always managing to get firearms. GUNS OF DESPERATION.
The photo shown was a sawed off bolt action .22 rifle.
