What those in various circles used to call the “K-mart special”.

Back in the day, one could go to the sporting goods section at
K-mart, and get a $49.99 .22 bolt action or a breech load shotgun of dubious quality. One would then proceed to saw off the barrel and stock, and add an improvised pistol grip.

Not that I’ve ever participated in this highly illegal activity of course, nor would I condone such an endeavor.

I remember them coming from Western Auto and for a lot less than $49.99 plus there were no sales taxes back then, the price was as marked.

After the Clinton AW ban, a raid on a drug house in Chicago netted a large number of sawed off single shot shotguns. No A-s-s-sault rifles!
