...Messi made his debut for Argentina in 2005, going on to make 113 appearances.

Your daughter is so lucky!!! Litbarski and Allofs, what memories those two names stir. Back to my days of watching Soccer Made in Germany on PBS as well as the WCs in 82/86/90.
Schumacher, Rumminigge. Augenthaler, Matthaus... I can go on forever. If only Schuster had played in 82 and 86.
I'm surprised that I haven't heard anyone refer to Roberto Baggio who similarly missed a kick for Italy in a Penalty Shootout in a World Cup Final vs Brazil when his attempt sailed over the crossbar.

So much wanted Argentina to win last night. Messi missing that shot was heart breaking. The weight of that miss, compounded an already heavy load of criticism of Messi not previously helping the national team, plus being an almost a non-factor in the WC.
The guy is a great player. A tough loss.
Just for comparison’s sake, Robbie Keane had his first international cap for Ireland in 1998 and he was on the roster at this year’s Euro:

Maybe Messi doesn’t feel like he plays well for Argentina.
It happens to all of them, I will always remember the pk Maradona took against Italy in 1990; because Chris Berman's commentary was "Maradona kicking more like Madonna misses the penalty kick" in that evening's sports highlights.
Yes, I vaguely remember that miss by the Divine Ponytail, Baggio.
Good.
Yes, I definitely remember Littbarski, apparently with them in both of those ‘86 and ‘90 World Cups.
When VHS tapes were popular, I use to watch those recorded games over and over especially the ‘86 and ‘90 World Cups.
I had a tape of some friendly between Italy and Spain played in Spain in the early ‘70s, black and white. A draw but very entertaining.
I also had the 1980 Euro Final of Germany vs. Belgium.
I hope someone posts those many matches, some rare recordings on youtube.
Maradona missed against Yugoslavia (Argentina still won), he made the PK against Italy.
This is the kind of result I expect today, a draw. Italy too, often does not do as well in penalty shootouts, so Italy in all likelihood, wants to avoid a shootout.
Quite a match of the titans here.
Thanks for correcting me.
Thank you! I watched some video clips and read some stuff about those days on the Wikipedia. It’s always nice to look up history. Today we are watching history being made. Enjoy the day! :)
I heard a vague mention that the 2020 Euro Cup is going to be played around the continent; not just in one or two countries. I do not know myself.
Italy decided not to take Pirlo; that’s a bit questionable. He’s an all-time great and very creative but this team has been playing well.
