I was doing Construction Management on a new jail. In discussing “attack rating” on certain window and door frames, the sheriff said, come with me, I want to show you something. He took me to an emergency fire exit stairway behind the current courthouse and jail. He then showed me two fire doors that an inmate had breeched, one at the top of a stair and one at the bottom. Both were constructed with a two hour fire door, concrete grouted jambs, set into a filled concrete block wall with steel ties every block course 8 inches on center.

The doors had magnetic strikes to hold them locked if the fire alarm was not sounding and heavy hardware. An inmate like this had hit each door at a run and breeched it. Broke shoulder and rib bones but still got out.
