In an armchair experiment where humans are thought of as no wiser than animals, scientists have found that climate change could empty some nations by 2100.
A warming of 2 degrees Celsius would cause 34 percent of the world’s population to migrate more than 300 miles, to places on the fringes of the tropics where the temperatures are milder. Dramatic population declines might occur in Mexico, Central America, Africa and India. The results were published today in Scientific Reports.
The scientists are cautious about the predictive power of their thought experiment, particularly as it relates to humans. People, unlike animals, can adapt to higher temperatures through technologies such as air conditioning. They also face barriers to long-distance migration, such as land borders, language barriers or even buying an air ticket. The scientists stressed that they are only exploring a hypothetical response to rising temperatures.

India’s “seasons” are substantially different from what most Westerners are used to. While there would probably be some evacuation of the interiors of Rajasthan and Gujarat, which are mostly desert, an increase of 2C wouldn’t have much of an effect on the rest of India. The “hot” season only lasts a couple of months, and most of India is already adapted to dealing with the sweltering heat (temps upwards of 40C outside of the highland interior where Bangalore is located) of May and June even without air conditioning. Once the end of June rolls around, the Monsoon is on the way, and once it hits the temps don’t get much above 30C, and it’s the humidity that becomes unpleasant (feels like 115% percent sometimes). It’s possible that an increase in temps would even strengthen the pre-monsoon high pressure that develops over the Thar and thus strengthen the monsoon as well. So no, an increase of 2C wouldn’t be likely to empty out India, but it might have a stronger effect on countries that don’t get the cooling benefit of a monsoon.

I’ve lived in India. The houses there are almost universally built from brick and concrete, so during the summer the whole structure holds heat. Even with double-pane windows, the A/C often can’t keep up, and that’s assuming the power hasn’t been cut off due to sagging power lines or an overheated transformer somewhere. When the air gets over 100 degrees, the condenser just can’t reject much heat, which means that a “cool” room is “only” 85 degrees or so.
