Chickens and hogs are both omnivores (just like bears), and they both taste good. In fact, chicken tastes like........chicken!
I think I’d rather go RINO hunting with a spear.
And there’s several I have in mind.
Watching the video might clear up that misconception.
"About an hour after he speared the bear the guide showed up but it was just too dark to begin tracking and at that time, blood had completely washed away. ....
Not having the actual measurements, the guide estimated the bear to weigh over 400 pounds and measure a 19-20-inch skull...."
The above implies strongly that he did not retrieve the bear. Article states his wife got one previously on the trip.
Watching the video might clear up that misconception.
I’m rooting for the bear.
“Different skill set.”
Actually it’s almost exactly the same skill set. Same arm, same general motion (just at different angles). The stance, rotation and grip are different, but not a problem. Anyone who threw a javelin in high school can learn to throw a spear accurately at close range in a matter of hours. It actually takes longer to learn the reverse (i.e. to go from only throwing a spear at close range to learning how to throw a javelin for distance).

Essentially the same thing, just different angles really. Anyone who masters one, can master the other (although not necessarily being a champion in distance with the javelin).
I have killed hundreds of big game animals a 60 yard run is considered a clean kill.
Unless one brain shoots them they don’t die much faster no matter what you shoot them with.
Bear was a great addition to the pioneer diet. It’s very fatty, which was needed because venison, etc., is so lean it’s hard to digest.
Some of the old timers said that cougar is the best tasting wild meat.
“Cougar”
I concur with that opinion.
Yeah, like the old farmer that had the same axe for 50 years. Of course, the handle's been replaced 5 times, and it's had 2 new heads, but it's still the same axe.
Same skill set. The farmer used the axe generally the same way for 50 years.
Like anything else eaten, it depends on what the meat ate recently and how it is cared for after its kill. Good bear tastes alot like beef even though you should cook it as pork.
I have dozen s of black bear on my property in the fall, they come for wild apples which grow profusely here in the grwon in
pastures of our old farm.
They nevere bothered us for years but this spring we had a juvenile 3 year old bear who was a wannabee pet, had to live trap him and relocate. He was still hanging with his mom, and now she will move on and find a new mate.
I like bears, and would not shoot one unless I had to.I would drop it with my 45-70 if it come to that, game over in a second or too.
But spearing a bear eating bait out of a gut can? That’s not
really much of what any good hunter would be doing.
Truthfully I am at home in the woods but afraid of bears. Due to lack of interest in hunting them GA is now lousy with bears. They are a nuisance and a menace. Like you if necessary I or Mr GG2 would dispatch one with a slug from our Mossberg 500 and never !ook back. But you are right that just throwing a spear and wounding a bear eating feed is just wrong.
Bear Hunting with a Spear takes big, brass cahones.
The bear only ran 60 yards before collapsing. It didn’t suffer for days as it would with a broken back or a couple of broken legs which is common in vehicle strikes.
If you'd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.
