The Death Panels of Massachusetts

Drive-By Post: Remember those death panels? Well, they are here. I can speak from experience. Patients are being denied services based on the dictates of the state. It's called "prior authorization".

Oh, how do I know this is happening? Because the place I work is getting pummeled by it - and so are my own physicians. People are scrambling to do work arounds just to keep the care that patients need. Depending on your insurance you only get the the state deems necessary for your care - despite the doctors opinion.

This is in MA.

Does anyone else have this going on?

I’m in MA. What exactly do you mean? My mother in law has not had any denial of care, she’s 74 and has COPD.

You need to give specifics or some will get the impression you’re making things up.

Wasn’t there a song about this;

“when the lights go out in Massachusetts...”

or something like that...

A health insurance policy is a contract.

The contract is required to cover “medically necessary” care in all PPACA required categories.

You may have to appeal to your insurer.

One you have exhausted your insurer appeals processes, then there is the legal system, as with other contracts.

http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/provider/insurance/masshealth/claims/prior-authorization/

This policy (read: Romney/Obama care) is getting people with legitimate claims denial of coverage. Under the Affordable Health Care act (read: death panels), private insures can do the same - else just throw people off the rolls

ALL medical professionals in the state are aware of this.

I wonder where you are working?

My wife works at a hospital and they haven’t changed their processes at all. We are in Western MA.

What’s wrong with prior authorization per se?
