I know some of you think nothing will ever happen, but let's just say it will some day, and leaving the country will not be an option or something that you want to do. Where would you go?

I’m surprised Las Vegas didn’t make the cut. Ha!

Isn’t the fundamental problem getting there?

We moved to WV for many of the same reasons.

But it’s awful here. It’s so bad, I wouldn’t even suggest visiting. ;)

The Native Americans experienced a collapse with European colonization. Only two tribes managed to maintain their presence in the Eastern Half of the US the Cherokee hiding out in the Smokies and the Seminoles.

I’m glad he didn’t mention areas in Utah or Wyoming or Montana or Idaho. Probably because those are the places he’d really go.

NO NO NO NO NO! Arkansas is FULL of rednecks, inbreds cottonmouths, chiggers, rattlesnakes, ticks, poison ivy, poison sumac, poison oak, coral snakes, and in Pine Bluff, feral humans. Go somewhere else! We are full....and the Kudzu will swallow your house up!

I’d venture a guess that the best locations have “rural” in their descriptions.

So in the meantime, you want to have reasonably convenient access to things like employment, education, cultural and extracurricular activities for your kids, modern medical facilities, shopping, and all the trappings of modern life.

I would think that if you have those expectations you are
going to be shockingly disappointed.

right distance from cities, have a good water supply, strong rural and conservative traditions, agricultural activity in the form of farming and ranching, and a history of subsistence farming

I vote for Central FL. No state income tax, the property taxes aren't as high as on the ocean, and they have a very good water supply, lots of critters (that are a good deterrent for wan'drin city folk), VERY conservative traditions, multiple agri farming and ranching, etc. Those towns I would live in would be Arcadia, FL, Wauchula, FL, Sebring, FL, Lake Wales, FL, Avon Park, Bowling Green, FL, Lakeland, FL, Zolfo Springs, FL. THAT is a great area with great people. They NJ, NY, MI, and OH retirees don't even go near those places. Lots of God, guns, and guts in those cities.

Areas with a strong military presence will do well

Oak Ridge, TN and similar heavily secured communities
will probably survive the holocaust,
Unless someone blows up the nuclear plants

Watch the 2010 movie “Winter’s Bone” for an idea about Ozark living.
