I think this is all a futile exercise aimed at undermining the Republican party and helping Clinton, not at offering a serious, viable alternative.

That's all it is. A Clinton victory buys the GOP establishment another four years to put measures in place that will ensure nobody like Trump ever comes along again.

If Trump wins, it's over for them. They've lost the party.

Actually, I don’t think it’s a play to help Hillary. I think it is a play to make a three-way contest come out to where no candidate gets 270 electoral votes. This only needs to be enough for this ‘dark horse’ to take a critical swing state or maybe two. Certainly, the dark horse doesn’t have to qualify for every state.

With no clear majority of electoral votes, the process gets thrown to the House of Representatives (for three candidates). Here’s where Kristol is hoping the GOPe can snivel up to their pick - whoever that might be.

Just my two cents - likely wrong..

Enjoy the attention, Mr. Kristol, it’s not going to last. And the kind of attention that follows in its wake is the kind you don’t want.

I lost all respect for Powell when he knew before there was any investigation that his own Deputy Secretary was the source of the Valery Plame expose’. Armitage told him and Powell’s answer was to keep it between them. All the while, an independent counsel was assigned and Scooter Libby was convicted of nothing more than not agreeing with journalists. In actuality, the IC knew all along but still went on a two year witch hunt against the Bush administration.

That “honorable” man, Colin Powell.

I agree.
I would say Kristol has definitely got someone in mind and not just fabricating out of thin air.
Powell and Powell’s wife do not want, nor need, the aggravation (she prevented him from running twenty years ago; Romney has already emphatically taken himself out after teasing with a run; and Ryan would not have played nice with Trump at their last meeting — somewhat quelching any notions of him going against Trump. He also would have made more of an obvious indication by now in his many interviews.
There is no general or admiral with name ID offering himself either.
Meanwhile, look how quixotic Kasich is; how he stayed in the primaries WAY past his due date. He’s also wanted an open convention. He has todied up to the New England libs and wouldn’t mind things going to his old stomping ground, the House of Representatives.
Finally, he is not someone Kristol would hurry to the front of the stage before the GOP convention. That would give the delegates an opportunity to shoot down this idea. But . . . if this is the best Kristol can do, then he’s going to be rather pathetic looking guy. The feeble companion of a Don Quixote.

The terms "Rhodes Scholar" and "honorable person" were, are, and forever more will be mutually incompatible. They are complete opposites to one another...

I think the ‘him’ to which he was referring was Trump. He and Trump were already going after each other, and I don’t think Trump had any scheduled Memorial Day appearances, thus the swipe of ‘whatever he’s attending’. Cause you know a politician wouldn’t pass up a patriotic holiday to campaign!

“Kristol is playing y’all for attention.”

Start canceling subscriptions to the Weekly Standard. That will get his attention. And, shut him up.

Yeah, but you don’t run an irrelevant faux conservative magazine. I think Billy boy needs to take another cruise, Lou Dobbs is supposed to have him on his show soon-I hope he eviscerates this trash.

Let's face it. Any "conservative Republican" with any significant firepower capable of making any major in-roads in this election has either run in this cycle (there were 17 candidates, for God's sake), or has previously run and been rejected.

Short of Rush Limbaugh, there's no "star" waiting in the wings that has a significant shot at winning a sizable enough percentage of the vote to make a real difference.

Not that Limbaugh could win. But I do think given Trump-Hillary options, he could pull a significant conservative vote.
