His general-election appeal in question, Donald Trump's senior team is promising anxious Republicans that voters will see "a real different guy" soon after the GOP front-runner claims his party's presidential nomination.
"When he's out on the stage, when he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose," Paul Manafort, who is leading Trump's primary election strategy, told Republican National Committee members in a private briefing late Thursday. The Associated Press obtained a recording of the discussion.
"You'll start to see more depth of the person, the real person. You'll see a real different guy," Manafort said.
"He gets it," Manafort said of Trump's need to moderate his brash personality. "The part that he's been playing is evolving into the part that now you've been expecting, but he wasn't ready for, because he had first to complete the first phase. The negatives will come down. The image is going to change."

Here’s a general scenario that sometimes plays out. It is not directed at Trump or anyone else in particular.
Someone you like is saying something that you don’t like. He glances at you and gives you a wink, and continues with his message. It’s as if to say, “I’m misleading those ‘other people,’ but you know what I really think.”
Historically, this has happened a lot with the left. I think Fidel first ran for office saying he was not a communist. The American communist party loves, loves, loves Obama. Most liberal Democrats would respond in anger at the suggestion that Obama is communist. It’s always “the other guy” who is being fooled, never you or me. I think this is a real problem with the left, one to discuss in another post.
Sadly, the same phenomenon sometimes plays out with conservatives. I think it was (moderate) Nixon who said you tack to the right to win the nomination, then tack to the middle to win the general election.
The “I’m lying to the other guy” argument should give us pause. Oh sure, our ego and wish fulfillment says “yeah, I believe it.” But reason leaves us unsettled. Just maybe, he is lying to us.
You bet he’s going to be different in November.

This forum will survive the strife of the primary; but if things go as some predict, I wonder if we will survive the “I told you so” in the general.
Okay so, misconstrue the part he’s playing with lying to his supporters regarding his positions/promises on the issues- the same thing Mitt tried to do. Which failed by the way.
Good article, easy fodder for the cruzbots or Mark Levine, but those with any insight at all, and any knowledge of business matters concerning Trump know that he has to appeal to many types of people, and although he may seem brash, that is not the way to conduct business effectively.
I think he says what he means, and usually has a good idea how to achieve things he says. I don’t think he has lied to us about anything, and his demeanor will change once it gets down to brass tacks.
Fact is, everyone has two sides to themselves, at least. One while your at work, and one when your not.
The great ones, can play a crowd, and be real with them, and Identify with them.
They are equally good at giving back as good as they get, the really good can give back more, and cover it with documented facts.
A good debater has studied his foes and knows that the debate is a lot more that just the subject of the debate.

People that support Trump see the big ideas Trump is proposing. Of course, they understand he has a rally persona, but foremost they see his intent to better the country.
Pander to the right in the primary, move slightly left for the general. It’s a good tactic, used by R candidates for decades. This is nothing new, nor is it a gotcha about Trump.
The honesty is amazing.
Ted plays: Reagan, Princess Bride, Outsider, Christian, Principled Conservative, Endless Movie rolls, etc. Largely fake.
Politics is a kind of theater. Trump has already shown his “more serious side” in countless interviews that surface skimmers will NEVER watch. Cruz is theatrical, too, and probably could be a stage actor with that voice.

Now, if any of the Consistent Conservatives had applied even part of this over the past 30 years the country would not be in the shape it is in today. Instead Consistent Conservatives have stood, marched, and yammered for “family values”, “small government”, “lower taxes”, etc., all while just the opposite happened, over and over again. One betrayal of principle after another.

Fortunately, I don’t know the answer, because if I did, that would take half the fun out of it.
This much I do know: it won’t be the same.
I’ve spent the first twenty years of my working life building, accumulating, and accomplishing things that many said could not be done. The biggest challenge I see over the next twenty years is to figure out some creative ways to give back some of what I’ve gotten.
I don’t just mean money, although that’s part of it. It’s easy to be generous when you’ve got a lot, and anyone who does, should be. But what I admire most are people who put themselves directly on the line. Everything Ted Cruz says and does is scripTED. No one is more rehearsed and scripted than Ted. Trump is the most unscripted and unfiltered.
Trump just told everyone he is lying about being conservative.
His idiot followers will chose to ignore this.
In his next role, should he get the nomination, he'll work hard to broaden his appeal to the Sanders outcasts who will be looking for a lifeline. Plenty of free stuff, universal health care and big government solutions. He'll tone down the immigration stuff to try to pick up a small but significant portion of the Latino vote. He'll hammer Hillary to soften up her support.
Should he win the office, he'll finally be able to run the country the way he thinks it should be run. This will be great news for you, if you think your needs strongly coincide with those of a big government pro-abortion billionaire NYC liberal who bangs his friends wives and is a strong proponent of a pay-to-play government model.
On a lighter note, he has praised the way the Chinese government forcefully cracked down on the Tiannemen square protestors (killing thousands) and admires the way Putin runs his ruthless oligarchy.
This is well known about Trump, and we are finally starting to see the truth of his positions. He’s pro-abortion, for raising taxes, for massive immigration, and is much more PC than he had originally acted with all of this bathroom nonsense.
If only the fools voting in the GOP primaries had caught on to this charade earlier....
Interestingly enough, THANKS to the convoluted primary process that has been much maligned, if enough people in the GOP see the light and demand that their delegates save us from him, it can be done. But it better happen fast!
And all with really, really, bad acting.
