We have surrendered our most primary weapon - our minds
Back in 86 I saw Oliver Stones graphically intense Platoon. It was opening in a brand new theater with a screaming sound system that made you feel as though you were in the center of the battle. Sitting right across the aisle were two well-dressed, young, absolutely moronic parents who had their son sitting between them. He could not have been more than five. Stones ultra-intense Vietnam War masterpiece had the audience thoroughly keyed up. Roaring artillery and wholesale slaughter were coming from every direction without warning. The poor little one was horrified and jerking with every explosion. A scene where a cocky young soldier beat a childishly simple young man to death with the butt of his M-16 actually had the battle-weary audience laughing at a remark he made.
For reasons in the same category as all that I put my family’s last TV set in the alley in 1988 with a chunk of concrete placed inside through it the screen. For related reasons I do not own or use a cell phone or carry a tablet around with me.
You are very wise my friend....although in regards to Northwest Florida being the culturally southernmost part of the state, I dunno, we’re pretty Southern over here in Northeast Fl. You got the Alabamians, we got the Georgians. :^)
Its a tough call. As a fairly tech savvy older American I agree with the article but not to the point that I would toss out my points and instruments of information access. On the other hand, I strongly disagree with those who argue it is solely a matter of parental responsibility and would deny a connection between screen and real violence.
I still have my desktop with which I read and comment on the news of the day at FR and other sites. As for cell phones, when I am out of touch I want to be out of touch. I find I am still able to talk to people face to face without a cell phone. That seems to be a waning talent in the society.
