“Cheap natural gas is killing coal.” While that headline has been written dozens of times over the last few years, it continues to be true. In fact, natural gas has become even cheaper over the past year, and the slow death of coal is poised to accelerate.

In a new report from Moody’s, and reported on by SNL, the ratings agency predicts that cheap natural gas could lead to another massive wave of coal-fired power plant closures over the next year and a half.

"Are there no more miracle products to be gotten from that dirty, black rock ? "

Soros seems to think so, he's buying big interests in the coal companies that are folding, some of the companies or even the whole company.

Read up on the history of Ohio. They had a natural gas boom that cut the use of coal down to nearly nothing other than for making coke to feed the still mills and after a few decades the gas ran out the the mines in Southeast Ohio and West Virginia started doing well again.

As for dirty, black, rock :

    Says Phoebe Snow
    about to go
    upon a trip to Buffalo
    "My gown stays white
    from morn till night
    Upon the Road of Anthracite"

But, but, what about solar and wind? I thought that was the future. At least that is what Der Fuhrer Obungo keeps telling us.

thats not whats killing coal. Obama and his regulations and unfair deals with foreign countries (who compete with our industries) are killing domestic oil, coal AND natural gas. if he has his way we will be living in caves again.

What's that got to do with whether or not Anthracite is a dusty, dirty, rock ?

Some companies modernize; some don’t. Some companies survive; some don’t. A cutesy advertising slogan wasn’t sufficient to overcome the huge price disadvantage of anthracite and keep the DL&W in business. Anthracite makes up less than 1% of known coal reserves, by the way.

I think coal is still the best fuel for energy production, you can’t stockpile 30 days of natural gas on site.

That is pure BS.

Natural Gas is not killing coal.

Obama and his green cronies are killing coal.

I believe you mean electricity production, not energy production.

Some things do not run well on coal, autos for example.

Only on Tuesdays, generally.

Although, in many circles actually knowing the difference between anthracite, bituminous and lignite isn't considered all that effete.

OK, now I get it. The old “thermal coal isn’t dirty” joke. A classic.
