PA Delegates 18th District

Posted on 04/04/2016 9:05:27 AM PDT by HamiltonJay

As you probably know, Congressional Delegates in PA (54 total) are unbound. They can vote for whoever they like regardless of who wins their districts... A voter will vote for their preference for president and then also vote for 3 delegates to represent their district. However those delegates are not obligated to vote for whoever won their district, and the ballot does not give any indication of who the delegate will support if elected.

I have been trying to find delegates in my district 18th who have stated publicly where they stand... SO far I have the following

Linton - no public comment on who he would support, but implied he would not vote for Trump even if he won the district.

Means - Will vote for Cruz no matter who wins the district

Avolio and Strain both state they will support whoever wins the district.

I will keep digging, but I haven't seen the fully ballot, if it is out there so I don't know the entire list of candidates, but I am going to do my best to try to get this information out there so primary voters know who they heck they are voting for.

I haven't seen much press in PA yet in any attempt to educate voters to who delegates on the ballot support and there will be absolutely no indication on the ballots themselves. I Assume as the 26th gets closer, more reporting on this sort of thing will become available, but as of right now, this is what I have found... I hope other folks in other congressional districts will do the same.

Why vote if the will of the people is disregarded?

I posted in the PA board overnight regarding info on 4th District candidates in the York-Adams-Cumberland areas and the 16th District (Lancaster-Chester counties).

Of the 15 4th Distict candidates, Joe Sacco at position no. 15 is 100 percent Donald Trump and Marilyn Gillespie at position no. 3 is 100 percent Ted Cruz.

In the 16th District, three candidates are endorsed by the Republican Party (Denlinger, Dumeyer, Chiomento).

The other three on the ballot break down as

Douglas Brubaker-Cruz
Marc Lemon-leans towards Trump
Terry Christopher-leans toward Trump

WTAE-TV posted a story on those 18th District delegates with Sue Means, the Allegheny County GOP Chair, quoted as a definite Cruz supporter. I also noticed a “Jim Means” on the Pennsylvania Department of State candidate list (her husband, family member?).

A common thread in the news stories posted by the York newspapers, Lancaster newspapers and Allentown Morning-Call.

I think its important for the Trump campaign to direct mail registered voters by each district on the super voter list (people who always vote) like all candidates do in a typical election.

They need to ID the names of the people to vote for as delegate candidates in each district.

This same rule of thumb applies to the Ted Cruz campaign.

This is why it is critically important for any campaign that really wants to win delegates from Pennsylvania to let voters know which delegate candidates are theirs. For those from other states, the candidates for delegate are listed by their own names, with no indication of who they will support if elected.

Why vote if the will of the people is disregarded?

It's up to the voter to do their homework and to vote for the delegates that would support their candidate.

For example if you are for Trump, and a delegate says, "Never Trump", you obviously don't vote for that delegate.

Maryland sample GOP ballot lists candidate preference is there is one next to the delegate’s name.

I am voting here in PA on April 26th.

Some offices I will write in “John Galt” or some good person who I think could do the job.

For President, I have given Ted Cruz hundreds of dollars and call myself a supporter, but I will have to vote for Trump people or those I perceive as outsiders because insiders like my local elected officials who run as delegate candidates are hell bent on rigging the convention and changing the rules IMHO.

The Maryland system allows you to express a candidate preference and ‘The National Convention District delegates are directly elected on the primary ballot’.

Each congressional district gets 3 delegates allocated to the candidate who wins the district, but it looks like you vote separate for delegate candidates as individuals with the top three getting elected.

Also, 14 delegates are allocated to the candidate who wins statewide. Three are the GOP leaders of the state and the other 11 will be elected at the state GOP convention with the top 11 names being the people sent as ‘at-large delegates’

Some details are laid out at this link.

http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P16/MD-R#0426

(DELEGATES ARE ‘BOUND’ ON THE FIRST TWO BALLOTS)
Maryland is sending 38 delegates to the GOP convention.

By voting for the delegate of your choice your desire should be followed. This is a primary run by the Republican party. They make the rules.

State Delegates are bound to the winner of the state.. 18 I think the remaining are elected by district and unbound.

PA will always set up some way to game its people and the system, for 8 years we basically had a Governor owned by the mob.

It was only this election they finally bound officially the state level delegates.

Don’t ever kid yourself, the establishment makes sure it has the switches to impose its will, there is a reason coups are rare in political parties.

Voters will need to get informed in PA.

Yes, we vote for up to 3 delegates to the RNC convention besides voting for preference for president. If the delegate has a preference of candidate that is listed next to his/her name. The names are alphabetical.

In the general election, we must vote for each individual candidate, rather than the party's entire slate with one click (which we could always do in PA).

If you want your delegate to vote Trump, or at the very least vote for who won the district you need to know who the individual delegates in your district support.. it will NOT be on the ballot and they are not bound to support the winner of the district.

You will need to research and then also inform your friends and neighbors.

I won’t knowingly vote for a delegate who has stated they will vote for any delegate by name regardless of who wins the district, I just want a delegate who has stated they will vote for whoever wins their district.... That’s all.

I've called the R headquarters to get phone numbers so I could lobby my district

In a general sense, one method of eliminating names is to eliminate the local elected officials and party leaders on the ballot, unless they come out and say I 100 percent do or die support a candidate.

Two state reps and the GOP Chairman of my county are on the ballot among the 15 in my congressional district.

In the 15th District that runs from the Harrisburg suburbs to the Allentown area, two state reps and a county commissioner are on the ballot. One of the reps mumbles and evades a straight answer on who he supports in an “Allentown Morning Call” story.

That article does say they polled every delegate on the ballot for every district and 110 replied... 61 of the 110 replied, said they would support whoever won their district on the first vote. The rest were dedicated to someone in particular and 51 did not respond (There are a total of 162 folks running for delegate).

I sent an email to one of the authors asking them to publish the full list of their survey response, with the name, district and who they have publicly stated they would support... Don’t know if it will happen, but we shall see.

Good story, first time I saw it. It focuses on Southwestern PA.

The media is working and we need to work too flushing out 100 percent clear and concise commitments from these candidates ahead of the primary to break the GOPe stranglehold.

The presidential campaigns also need to direct mail, email and phone voters with the names of delegate candidates supporting the candidates in the various congressional districts.

Yes, I am in the 18th two and found 2 that have said they will support whoever wins... we vote for 3... so just need 1 more at least that can be verified and I will know who I will be voting for... the other 2 I mentioned have stated they are either dedicated to a particular candidate, or are not likely to vote for Trump even if he would win.
