I talked to some friends who brought their kids there for the usually fun event. They said that parents were flat-out ignoring the rules, and walking onto the field with their kids - where the parents would find and pick up eggs FOR their kids. The result was that these helicopter, "everything for my kids" types were taking the eggs that other kids should have a chance to get.
Basically, they were holding the hands of their 9 year olds instead of letting them run and have fun independently.
While there is a bad habit there, it's nothing that is new to us. Helicopter parents, they're called.
When other parents saw this, they complained. And then they got bent out of shape. Then they left.
But the kids who got eggs went through the lines and shared their eggs with the kids who had none - They didn't understand that what their parents did by not following the posted rules was wrong. They just thought it was a good day for everyone to have some fun, and get some eggs. So when certain parents mentioned how the other kids would have none - quite a few of the kids went to the lines and shared their eggs with kids who didn't get a chance to hit the field.
Then I saw on the local news their take. "Angry parents" and "bum rushed the field" and "shoved and trampled children as young as 6" (A 6 year old knocked down by someone)
Then.. THEN I see this on Drudge ! So I click the link, and see that they are talking about this in the UK. "Marauding parents" and other buzz to make you think that society had broken down and there were riots. They make the read think that it was pandemonium.
It wasn't. Everyone can relax. There were a few jerks who had to ruin it for everyone. This is not new.
Anyway, about your day - I thought it was interesting to see how this story has blown WAY out of proportion into something that it truly wasn't.
That reminds me. Half price candy tomorrow!
You think that is bad, check out the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Easter Egg Hunt and Hunky Jesus events at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
Yep! And Mexican Coke with real sugar instead of corn syrup all the way until Passover.
I like the Marauding parents version better
