Thompson waited too long in 2008 to enter the race and failed to build on the grassroots momentum that he could have ridden. I disagree with your notion that he attacked Huckabee. Huckabee was never a front-runner, or even a serious candidate for that matter, and Thompson did not really run an attack campaign against the other GOP candidates. Ultimately we were saddled with McCain in that race - who many suspected might run as a democrat. It usually does not serve the GOP well to nominate a candidate that can easily be mistaken for a democrat based on his policy positions and voting record.
In answer to your question, I voted for Fred Thompson in the 2008 GOP Primary, and I voted for Ted Cruz in the 2016 Primary.
Thompson lost the race when he dissed the firemen. That was a terrible optic. He knew it afterwards.
Of course, he wasn't an option by the time Pennsylvania's primary in late April rolled around.
I'm still leaning toward Ted Cruz, but attacking Trump for that weekend mayhem in Chicago was really, really stupid.
