If he’s going to hunt baby ones with a machete he’s gonna have to be crazy AND fast

Those pigs are fast and they don’t run to open ground. Don’t compare them to some sow you saw at the county fair that never had to work for a meal in her life.

“There are a number of videos on the net of hunters using only knives to boar hunt. You can find places that advertise knife hunts.”

I have done this several times and it is an experience like none other. We use bay and catch dogs to capture the hog and then wade into utter chaos to stick the pig in the heart while the dogs hold the pig by the ears.

The problem we have is that the hogs have learned to run to the nearest river and swim across.

Ate them in Switzerland (Neuchatel). As I remember, the meat was tough and dark, but the flavor was OK.

“My concern is .223 wont stop them. Advice?”

I think your concern is valid. I believe .223 would kill them, eventually. If I was hunting hogs on flat ground without trees to scamper up, I would want enough gun to drop them ASAP. I once conducted a primitive test to compare a .223 to a .30-06 - a frozen turkey. The .223 shot tiny holes into the turkey with little effect. The .30-06 blew the thing to pieces. I now know what I’d be using! I also have an 1886 Winchester loaded with .45-70 cartridges - I think that would be fine hog medicine at close range.

I have hunted wild hogs with a bow for 15 years with no injuries. I am very careful and do not take risky shots.

Have ‘em ride up on a boar while you shoot it with a .22 from range. Best of both worlds.

Indeed it would. I’m planning a pig hunt for this spring in Wisconsin.

Be very careful, if they are in a pigpen, chances are that they belong to an armed farmer!!!;)
