At least during Obama&'s presidency there has been a "yah but" every time the unemployment rate gets announced, mainly because of able people dropping out of the workforce. In that regard commentators point to U-6, which was 9.9% this last time while the U-3 generally reported was 4.9%. Other folks say this government badly understates unemployment and it really is something above 20%.

I have found sources making that statement before, but was never able to follow how they computed that rate. Shadow Government Statistics at http://www.shadowstats.com/ is one source I checked. I do not know whether I just was not looking carefully enough or whether these folks do not tell the method of computation. Well, DoughtOne who posts to Free Republic came up with a method I could understand. I even duplicated it in an Excel spreadsheet.

If I was running things, only certain items would be allowed on an EBT charge.

Alternately, you’d show up at a store, slot your card, and get X number of boxes and such. Pre-packed, basic foods.

Say a Canned goods box, a Dry Goods box, and a Perishable box (likely a Styrofoam cooler). 1 of each box per week per covered person.

Don’t like the selection ? Tough. Go get a job if you want better. . .

“More than 50% of food stamp recipients do have a job and are working.”

This is equally concerning. If we’ve gotten to the point at which working citizens can’t afford enough food, then we’ve sunk to a very bad and very sad level. Instead of ‘guessing’ at the reality of all this, the American public deserves to see real data on the state of the nation. Instead of just calling for political candidates to release their tax records, how about releasing the raw government data on jobs, unemployment, the federal budget and debt, government pension expenses and future liabilities, medicare and medicaid cost overruns, the social security ledger, etc. etc.

As they say, follow the money.
The grocery industry has a lot of skin in the deal.

I'm curious about this. Is it because steak & lobster is ‘nutritious’ and therefore can be purchased? Incredibly expensive though!

I like the ratio of people working to working age people. That’s like 50-60%. Implying that unemployment is really 40-50%. However there is some portion of the population that is independently wealthy and doesn’t have to work. I doubt that is >10%. And there are people who are truly disabled. I doubt that is >10% too.

“Of course, a chart by Sen. Sessions was posted that stated 91% of migrants collect food stamps.”

Of course, since National Review’s prostitute endorsed Trump, we shouldn’t believe anything Sessions says.

Junk food, beer, wine, donuts, chocolates, lobsters, etc can be bought with EBT cards.

Even casinos at least they used to be able to in California.

I remember during LBJs tenure people were pointing out that food stamps was buying beer, and The LBJ administration declared it was no ones business what these people spent that money on.

It’s because no company wants to provide benefits. So they make sure the people all work part time. And many of the big employers like Target or Disney make their employees be prepared two weeks ahead for schedules thst could have them working at ANY time. They could work Monday at 4 am - 9 am, then Tuesday at 3 pm to 7:30, etc. They can only block their time two weeks in advance if they can’t come in on a certain day or at a certain time. Thus they can’t hold down two of these jobs. Each one requires potential availAbilty 24/7 and the only people who get ahead are those who are always available. Thus no one can earn decent pay at these common entry level jobs.

you can work and still get food stamps.
Gross Monthly can = 130% of poverty rate and net can = 100% of poverty rate.

The dollar limit goes up for more people in the family

Well, many people suspect that these working food stamp recipients don’t report all of their income. They may work on cash jobs that would increase their incomes to the point where they wouldn’t be eligible for assistance.

The number of people on food stamps is a real number. The unemployment number on the other hand was pulled out of someone’s ass.

Living in a rural area I had never witnessed the massive EBT shopping trips discussed on FR. Until yesterday.

My 14 year old son and I entered Aldi while three women had their 4-5 carts (heaped full-one even higher than their heads) at the checkout. Aldi cashiers are very fast, but we completed my weekly shopping for our family of eight and they were still being checked out.

I’ve never seen anything like that. Once I explained that it was most likely paid for by food stamps my son was livid. He has already worked for a few years (first for his dad) and because he’s a good worker ended up with over 40 hours most weeks last summer at DQ-lots of 13-14 hour shifts, often working past midnight. At age 14.

When he thought about part of his paychecks being taken for that, he went on a rant!!

Needless to say he’s experienced times of financial difficulty where there wasn’t much food in the house. Seeing non-workers having so much sent him over the edge.

That’s a LOT of food.

Hope they had an Escalade or similar to get it home.

Who knows- we had our groceries loaded in our 12 year old suburban and were out of the parking lot before they left the store.

The three women must have pooled their EBT accounts. Of course it’s entirely possible that they paid for it all themselves, but from the looks of it all (last cart was entirely non-food items) they had government assistance.

All I know is that my son is a die hard conservative now.

Most people don’t know this but a ton of our enlisted men with families are on food stamps. Because of the lower pay and the number in their family a lot of them qualify. When I worked for our welfare dept in food stamps I used to process all the Edwards Air Force guys.

The principle applied in the USSR is that of socialism: "From each according to his ability; to each according to his work."

I think you mean "according to his NEED". It sounds downright "fair" until you realize that some bureaucrat gets to decide what you NEED!
