Interesting article. I was thinking of writing a paper called “Which has(had) the Better Quality of Life, King Solomon or Welfare Willy?”

With the exception of the harem, I’ll bet you could prove that Welfare Willy lives a much more luxurious life than Solomon did.

There are gadgets freely available today that Rockefeller did not have back in the day. However, the amount of ass-kissing he got is beyond compare to what is available today, except perhaps for that received by the First Family.

I thought the author had to be around 25 years old...I looked him up, and he was born in 1958. Weird. Maybe he’s writing for a younger audience...the type that wouldn’t realize we didn’t have cell phones 100 years ago?

With the exception of the harem

Not sure I'd concede you that point. Welfare Willie probably has access to as many 'available' women as did Solomon.

Possibly even more, but I’ll bet he doesn’t have quite the quality.

If I had a choice, I’d go back to 1916.
At least back then people spoke with each other face to face. There was a real sense of community. Neighbors helped each other.

As to all the new gadgets, they gave everyone the “I have to have it yesterday” attitude. No one stops to smell the roses anymore.

Nonetheless ...

... tooth brushes brush teeth, rotating or not.
... you could possess weed without going to prison.
... you didn’t have to be in touch with everyone all the time.

Don't be so sure of the lack of a harem.

And even as Rockefeller would be derided as a robber baron, he was probably the savior of the world’s whale population. Through the introduction of kerosene fuel for lighting, sperm oil became all too costly to produce.

No way I would have lived past five in 1916.So no, I would choose to live then if I could for any amount of money.

Welfare Willy always has an 18 carat gold chain around his neck and top-of-the-line electronics.

And,of course,a bad back.

This is actually an important point to bring up and Bern it into progressive heads. The difference between 1916 and 2016 is 100 years of capitalism. After a century of capitalism , we all live like kings. What has socialism produced in 150 years?

He teaches economics at George Mason University and has a blog named for F.A Hayek, so he’s definitely not a liberal, unless you mean classical liberal.

“In 1989, for two hours’ labor at the minimum wage, an American worker could obtain, at a corner Sizzler, a feast more opulent, more nutritionally rich and gastronomically diverse than anything available to almost all the citizens of the socialist world (including the elite) at almost any price.” — David Horowitz

Or any king in history

We have the fattest, laziest, most well taken care of “poor” people the world has ever seen. Yet still we “have to do more” to help.

I would also for most of the same reasons you mentioned.

Morals and a sense of neighborly love existed on a much bigger scale also.
