New NBC/Marist Poll: Cruz Within Striking Distance of The Donald in South Carolina

According to a new NBC/Marist poll, Ted Cruz is within striking distance of Donald Trump in South Carolina. Whereas Cruz was trailing Trump by a massive 16% one month ago, he's now come within 5%:

"In the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll of South Carolina conducted after Saturday’s GOP debate, businessman Donald Trump, 28%, edges Texas Senator Ted Cruz, 23%, by only 5 points among likely Republican primary voters statewide including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a candidate or who voted by absentee ballot."

The establishment's frontrunner, Marco Rubio, is stuck at 15%, the poll shows, and he's closely followed by that other establismentarian Jeb! Bush, who is currently supported by 13% of likely Republican primary goers.

Unlike some of the other South Carolina polls released in recent days, this poll was conducted completely after last Saturday's debate in which Trump went full Iraq War Truther. As a result, the billionaire businessmen has lost support across the board, albeit especially among those who earn less than $50.000 a year. In other words: blue collar voters.

Trump is now also trailing Cruz among South Carolina voters who describe themselves as "very conservative": 22% versus 42%. And his double digit lead among Tea Party conservatives one month ago has been transformed into a small but important 4% deficit: 31% versus 35%. Amazingly, Trump -- who says he has never asked God for forgiveness despite trying to abuse eminent domain to take an old lady's home and cheating on his first wife Ivana Trump -- is still very competitive with Cruz among Evangelical voters, 29% versus 26%. Other than that, the poll shows that momentum is now against Trump and for Cruz...

Caucus state vs Primary state.

Still thinking there was some unexplained crossover voting which altered the outcome.

The Iowegians I’ve talked to have said that they didn’t see many Dem crossovers, but oddly knew past Republicans who went to Dem caucuses! I don’t even have a wild guess about why!

The oddities took place in a handful of larger counties, all Romney territory in 2012.

I have no empirical data, but exit polling showed a substantial youth vote in these caucuses.

Just didn’t look right....

If you mean Rubio-supporting areas, there’s no mystery. The largest employers around Des Moines are financial services, and those upscale suburbanites rejected Gov. Branstad’s pleas for Christie and followed the RNC’s push for Rubio. A lot of those financial services execs are young, and the older ones bring their offspring to the caucuses like they bring them to church and the country club.

Maybe.....Vote totals in those locations were also way up.

What I'm saying is (historically) moderate counties went for Rubio and Cruz.

As I've been unable to find any factual data on crossovers, instead relying on exit polling and historical trends, I can't reply with 100% certainty. But, I will also note that if there was some type of crossover strategy, I don't think the Cruz campaign was involved, based upon the Cruz campaign spokesman's’ reaction one hour after Iowa voting had ended, where he was worried about big voter turnout favoring Trump.

Trump (won) 32.5%

Rubio 22.5%

Cruz 22.3%

I never want to hear nother word out of NBC/WSJ/Marist ever again. They had the Trump-Cruz spread at 5%. It was 10%, and Rubio.

They are humiliated and next time they spout off, I am going to remind everyone how they lie.
