While Republicans debate whether Ted Cruz is Barry Goldwater or Ronald Reagan, Democrats are faced with a similar conundrum concerning Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont. Some more elderly Democrats, with memories going back decades, wonder if the angry, white-haired socialist is the second coming of George McGovern.

No, he’s a white 0bama, and he’s a dim who is honest about what his policies are.
Second coming of Karl Marx is more like it. And the last breath for the US if elected.
They don’t fear a landslide defeat? Winning DC & VT?
He’s the second coming of Eugene McCarthy, and will suffer a similar fate when Her Highness is toppled from the campaign, just as McCarthy was brushed aside by the DEMe when LBJ was toppled from the 1968 campaign.
No, Sanders is a ne’er do well bum who never collected a steady paycheck for decades. His only jobs ever were mayor and senator. McGovern was a WWII hero, flying bombers into German flack to help win the war.
McG wised up after he left politics.
He openly complained about high taxes when he owned a hotel or similar property.
No, Sanserd is not McGovern reincarnated...this man is a communist. And an older democrat will understand the difference even more sharply. We “hunted down” communists back then, even killed a few...(Rosenbergs?). That was before communists became chic and before Che t-shirts came into style. Unlike the kids today, the older democrats will know the difference. This was obviously written by a young person who never lived through those times.
Unfortunately, that electorate doesn't exist anymore. What we have now is too many in the electorate that share the same views as McGovern.
George McGovern was a veteran and a true war hero. Sanders is a sandbagging government suck that hasn’t done a thing but tell everyone what to do with his communist agenda. Sanders won’t stack up to a millionth of McGovern.
In the 1912 election, socialist Eugene V. Debs won 6% of the vote.
In the 1972 election, Democrat George McGovern won 37.5% of the vote, which amounted to 29.1 million votes, compared to Richard Nixon’s 47.1 million. As background, the radical wing of the Democrat party had tried to take over in 1968, and failed, but had success in taking over the party in 1971. They have been a radical party ever since, divided between the big city (and the one remaining state, Arkansas) political machines, which function much like organized crime syndicates, and their radical socialist rank and file.
So this election will determine if their parties socialist wing has grown strong enough to dominate. It will also show if enough Americans are either ignorant of socialism, or have been persuaded that it is a legitimate form of government.
LBJ wasn’t “toppled.”. He declined to run because he knew he’d just stepped into hip-deep voodoo in Vietnam. So, being a typical liberal, he dumped his blunder on someone else and scurried back to Texas.
I remember McGovern and now that I am reminded I think that yes, this is spot on. Republicans have a Trump who sort of compares to Nixon and a Cruz who sort of compares to Reagan. Whichever, the Republicans are going to have to have a real blow out to overcome the Democrat cheating which will be wholesale and some even open and the millions of new Democrat voters that are being sworn in in wholesale lots the way Clinton made new citizens by the stadiumful in 1996. The cheating last time- more Democrat votes than voters in a number of precincts, voting machines preloaded in many more- is just a sample of what it will be this time. It will be obvious to everyone and celebrated by the Left even while provoking outrage on the right but the only organization that could do anything about it is the Republican Party which actually agreed in a Court settlement to never challenge the Democrat cheating. That is one ironclad promise the GOPe will cling to because it is so compatible with GOPe aims.
Oh, the one about all the evil dead white guys?
Yes, it is just about that bad.
From Wayne State U and Detroit Public Schools perhaps.
Interesting, I recall little of his life other than WWII and presidential candidate.
McG tried to open a bed and breakfast and was astonished by the amount of government intervention and taxes. Just another lib with no idea of the real world.
You’re correct. It was a B&B, not a hotel.
Age does wonders to my memory...
Agreed, call him what he is, a Communist, as is Obama. We need to quit sugar coating these hard left nutcases.
