ALISO VIEJO - An Orange County Sheriff's Department patrol deputy lost an AR-15 rifle late Tuesday night after placing it on the trunk of a patrol vehicle before becoming distracted and driving away. It was seven hours later when he realized the gun was gone.
It has yet to be found.
Around 7 p.m. the deputy was preparing to start a shift at the Aliso Viejo station, at 11 Journey. While doing so, he placed the AR-15 rifle -- stored in a black nylon bag with three loaded magazines, each of which can hold up to 30 rounds of ammunition -- on the car's trunk. He drove off before securing it in his vehicle, according to officials.

An affirmative action sheriff; fish rotting from the head down..
Had the same thing happen to my entire gun collection
Affirmative sir. His career should be finished. If the lost weapon is used in a crime, he should be charged as an accessory.
I thought it was a black rifle?!
But I thought arming criminals with full-auto weapons was government policy? ;-)
Different rules/laws for the rulers and enforcers than for the taxpaying citizens
I agree, but why hasn’t he been charged with a FELONY for Unlawfully Transferring a Firearm?? and an ASSAULT Weapon that is Banned for Regular Citizens to boot??
He should be in an Orange Jumpsuit, because that is exactly what would happen to you or I.
Is there an “If found, please return to...” card in the case? Any other way of identifying it?
Finders, keepers if you don’t know who to whom to give it back!
Agreed.
