Which John Wayne and WWII movie to introduce my kids to westerns and classic American films.

Posted on 01/19/2016 12:32:17 PM PST by Sparticus

So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on.

I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention?

I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?

So many to recommend.

A Western not mentioned; “Fighting Kentuckian”. Not actually a Western. More a Frontier movie. A forgotten gem with Oliver Hardy. Additionally; “Dark Command” and “North to Alaska”.

As for another WWII; “The Wings of Eagles” tracing the development of Naval Aviation.

Many John Wayne movies are available at no additional fee from Amazon Video if you are a Amazon Prime member. Likely many are also available form sites such as YouTube.

Regarding WWII; I also recommend preceding each movie with the “Why We Fight” series and the “Victory At Sea” series. Combined with the movies they will be a far better education that your children ever receive in school.

My recommendations for introducing your kids to WW2 and John Wayne: by John Ford, director — “They Were Expendable” [WW2 PT boats in the Philippines (1944)]; Ford's US cavalry trilogy: “Fort Apache” (1948), “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (1949), and “Rio Grande” (1950). Other John Wayne pictures of note: “The Searchers” (1956), “The Sands of Iwo Jima” (1949), and “The Horse Soldiers” (1959).

“The true ending is not shown anymore and replaced with a more ‘politically correct’ ending,”

Cant find anything about that. What got changed?

For the ages of the kids, I’d recommend for westerns with John Wayne: Big Jake, the Cowboys. (Not John Wayne but good one: Dustin Hofman)Little Big Man

WWII: Something light but yet show some of the hardships:
Kelly’s Hero’s, The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape
Maybe Stalag 17.
As a kid, my favorite WWII was Sands of Iwo Jima but thinking of kids today, the above are movies I think kids the ages you mentioned would like.

“The old movies can’t compete with the modern CGI.”

Of course they can. The CGI fests are terrible overall. They pump up the sound and blur things to make sure you miss more too.
But you can make a kid sit still and get into the story, and in about 15 minutes they’ll be hooked. But you cant have your laptop open, you have to sit there with, pointing out little things you know until they ask you to quit talking.

Would you like to come sleep on soft furs in my tent, Little Big Man. A Man Called Horse is good, too. Jeremiah Johnson.

They Were Expendable. Great flick and very historically accurate.

Best John Wayne: “Big Jake”

Best Western: “The Big Country” Gregory Peck. Charleton Heston. Chuck Conners. And Burl Ives in the role of his life. What is courage? What is honor? What does it mean to be a leader? What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to love a woman? “The Big Country” answers those questions.

Best WWII movie: “Battleground” The Battle of the Bulge from
the point of view of the foot soldiers. Again: what is courage?

The Shootist (1976).

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

HONDO - Great movie and an introduction to a great author ... Louis L’Amour, whose books are all family friendly and have shaped many a life including several of this countries presidents.

For a Western, The Searchers or any of the cavalry trio, I.e. Fort Apache, Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

Honestly, as a movie, the original Ten Commandments is a terrific bore. Almost 4 hours. I’d actually worry about a kid who could watch that straight through.
No gumption, no ambition. No desire to get outside and play.

That comes between our study of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Both Ten Commandments and Ben Hur are shown every year! Ben Hur gets them with the chariot race. They love to see people flying off.
