Any Trump Attacks on Cruz Probably Aren't Going to Work Like They Did with Others
Reaganite Republican ^ | 14 December 2015 | Reaganite Republican

Posted on 12/14/2015 5:03:58 AM PST by Reaganite Republican

After breezily dispatching (Walker, Perry) and/or permanently crippling
(Bush, Rand Paul) a number of weaker GOP challengers who dared to get-up-in-his-grill, Donald Trump is now making noises about going after Ted Cruz... but if he does, this time it's likely to be different.

First off, he looks like a disingenuous hypocrite to attack Ted Cruz after allying himself with him so closely to this point, saying nice things repeatedly, and claiming they think almost identically. He's clearly taking a huge risk in alienating the Republican base.

Trump has claimed he's only going to get into tangles with Cruz 'if he comes after me first', but with the media egging him on now daily The Donald seems to be attempting to stoke some open friction. This really does make him look like the politician he always claims not to be... Trump's all but said himself he has no reason to attack Cruz but for personal political gain-- how deeply cynical to not even hide it.

Truth is, Cruz's base of support consists of Evangelicals unlikely to be charmed into voting for Trump... as well as many voters like myself who agree with a lot of what Trump says -and think he's done the process a lot of good- but long ago decided Cruz was a better presidential candidate, one with a still-more-conservative platform. I'm not a Trump 'hater' at all, but there is nothing he could possibly say or do that would have me taking him over Ted Cruz in the primary.

For all the talk about how loyal Trump voters are, the support Ted Cruz has earned to this point has him out-front by ten points in Iowa now... and all of those people have already had a long, hard look at Donald Trump.

When Trump attacked those with fragile support, it was an entirely different situation that he faces in going after Ted Cruz... I'd say he's even going to have a hard time coming up with material/dirt on Senator Cruz -without sounding like Mitch McConnell- the guy is clean as a whistle and a true Reaganite... not much to pick apart there, nothing any conservatives would give a hoot about, anyway.

On top of that, Cruz probably won't take the bait, either...

You are trying to trick readers.

I support insurance which in fact covers all Americans.

I support American jobs.

In America. What is it about either of those two beliefs, which you find objectionable?

Thanks.

The only acceptable response for Cruz supporters from Trump would be for Trump to agree with what the noble Cruz said.

You're not paying attention, and you're projecting your own childishness onto others. Any response from the right would have been fine....let me repeat slowly for you....it's the attack from the left that is unacceptable. Just like when Newt attacked Mitt from the left - with Bain Capital - even as a newt supporter I slammed him. I slammed the Super PAC that bought the Bain film, as a member of that Super PAC. Why did I slam it? Because it was FROM THE LEFT

I guess some of us are man enough to admit when our guy is wrong, and some of you aren't.

I get the feeling that Trump and Cruz are working together behind the scenes. That’s why they don’t attack one another.

I’m not saying I’m right but it’s just a hunch.

It will come down to who do I, as a conservative voter, trust more - Trump or Cruz. Right now I trust Cruz. But if Trump wins the nomination I will support him. I would hope some of the Trump supporters would reciprocate if Cruz wins the nomination. We conservatives must stay united in our cause otherwise it’s Hillary and more liberal socialist Democrats.

Cruz is running a primary like a primary.

The guys whospent money on media presence early bruned out early. Cruz came from no where to beat the establishment favorite (Dewhurst) in Texas and then the Democrat in the general election in a state as large as the California that Reagan won in 1966.

He has more crossover appeal than you might think. Last week my plumber commented positively on my Cruz bumper sticker and he was familiar with Cruz’ tax plan. After 20 minutes I asked if he would be voting for Cruz in the Alabama primary, and he told me he was registered Democrat.

Cruz will maul HRC in the debates. He will not shrink from being aggressive but still dignified.

The name recognition comes in the general public. Folks have to have patience. These campaigns have a rhythm, and there is real danger in flaring out early, especially in such a crowded field.

EVERYONE who studies these things admits that Cruz has the most mature and sophisticated ground game.

I am NOT going to let who the GOP will and won’t support dictate my choice of a candidate.

Cruz attacked Trump first, with his arrogant, condescending comments. That was stupid, disloyal, dishonest.

Trump is have very gentle in his rebukes, I’m watching with delight. He has only commented on judgment and lack of ability to get along with people. There are so many more things he could say that are the absolute truth.

Yep. Exactly like the democRAT stooge who went to the Romney private gathering to secretly record the infamous 47% statement ...

“. I’d say he’s even going to have a hard time coming up with material/dirt on Senator Cruz “

He already did - on Sunday’s interviews he said Cruz can’t get along with people and won’t be able to work with them.

His Senate ‘accomplishments’ prove this.

Trump doesn’t give a long, detailed description of why not to vote for someone - he states the truth, branding them with a few words. Jeb is low energy, Hillary has no stamina or strength. That stuff sticks because it’s true and people easily recognize it.

Well A: I don't support Cruz's comments, and the difference between you and I is that I am adult and secure enough to admit when my guy does something foolish. B: it was not disloyal, there is no inherent loyalty there. Dishonest? Bullshit. These candidates don't owe each other to run everything by them first. C: Grow up, you don't think these guys ALL say things to their inner circle? GROW UP.

I agree with that... Apparently Cruz wasn't exactly in his inner circle since someone released the audio of him saying it.... unless it was his intention to have it released.

“I guess some of us are man enough to admit when our guy is wrong, and some of you aren’t.”

If that is the case, then why do you evade my original question. Cruz said that Trump can not be trusted with the nuclear trigger. Is that an attack from the Left or Right?
That is why Trump called him a “maniac”. Trump understood where Cruz was coming from; evidently you don’t.

“He’s piling up a series of missteps ... Netanyahu, Scalia, Iowa ethanol government handouts, personal attacks on Conservatives ....”

The Muslim comments that Netanyahu responded to are getting supporters here. Netanyahu defending Muslims is just weird.

What ‘personal’ attack did Trump say about Cruz? Saying he won’t be able to negotiate isn’t personal, it’s a needed skill as president. Cruz hasn’t been able to accomplish much of anything in the Senate other than making conservatives happy by attacking the establishment. But it hasn’t translated into any legislation.

There are lots worse things that Cruz could have said. Here's the real lesson that all candidates should learn and heed.... "Just because someone paid $500 a plate to attend my dinner doesn't mean they are on my side."

“True fact, the comments Cruz supposedly made were caught by secret recording at a private donor meeting, just the media trying to start something”

Wow, what a lot of distorting reality in one sentence!

Cruz ‘supposedly’ made comments that were recorded? Are you saying an impersonator said those things about Carson and Trump?

So the problem is really that the recording was secretly done, not that Cruz was bashing Trump and Carson behind their backs?

What he did was ok, that he got caught is the problem?

So in short...

Cruz avoided actually engaging anyone, and let the other candidates attack and get attacked, so they would exhaust themselves, leaving himself with a position in the primaries that he earned by doing as little as possible?

The problem with that is that you can only pull that off once. And you can’t pull this stunt in the general that’s for sure.

“He has more crossover appeal than you might think. Last week my plumber commented positively on my Cruz bumper sticker and he was familiar with Cruz’ tax plan. After 20 minutes I asked if he would be voting for Cruz in the Alabama primary, and he told me he was registered Democrat.”

Alabama? Ok. How about a state whose state color isn’t red?

“Cruz will maul HRC in the debates. He will not shrink from being aggressive but still dignified.”

Unless you plan on daily debates, that is a absurd to depend on that meaning anything. Debates don’t win elections.

“The name recognition comes in the general public. Folks have to have patience. “

HRC is one of the most recognized people on the planet. Cruz doesn’t have time to get known.

“EVERYONE who studies these things admits that Cruz has the most mature and sophisticated ground game.”

Where? Iowa? Unless you can find a hidden army of church ladies in swing states he can smooze for 6 months, then how is this ground game going to swing a state he HAS to have?

Trump won’t like trying to argue conservatism with Ted Cruz. His poll numbers won’t like him trying, either.

The teller of Cruz’s intent is in the audio.

Before saying what he said about Trump, he said he liked Trump and Carson.

It was a private meeting and there was no need to say that before attacking Trump and Carson.

Deliberate leak to make it look like he didn’t have any choice. Ted operates behind the back.

There is a couple things he has said which are puzzling to me.

One is when he says super pacs control their candidates because of all the money they give them but on the other hand they keep most of it for themselves.

So how are the candidates controlled by some contributions sometimes less than 100 thousand?

Second when he goes against Cruz for battling the GOPe in the Senate, why does he go against him when it’s one of things which Conservatives applaud him for?
