Any Trump Attacks on Cruz Probably Aren't Going to Work Like They Did with Others
Reaganite Republican ^ | 14 December 2015 | Reaganite Republican

After breezily dispatching (Walker, Perry) and/or permanently crippling
(Bush, Rand Paul) a number of weaker GOP challengers who dared to get-up-in-his-grill, Donald Trump is now making noises about going after Ted Cruz... but if he does, this time it's likely to be different.

First off, he looks like a disingenuous hypocrite to attack Ted Cruz after allying himself with him so closely to this point, saying nice things repeatedly, and claiming they think almost identically. He's clearly taking a huge risk in alienating the Republican base.

Trump has claimed he's only going to get into tangles with Cruz 'if he comes after me first', but with the media egging him on now daily The Donald seems to be attempting to stoke some open friction. This really does make him look like the politician he always claims not to be... Trump's all but said himself he has no reason to attack Cruz but for personal political gain-- how deeply cynical to not even hide it.

Truth is, Cruz's base of support consists of Evangelicals unlikely to be charmed into voting for Trump... as well as many voters like myself who agree with a lot of what Trump says -and think he's done the process a lot of good- but long ago decided Cruz was a better presidential candidate, one with a still-more-conservative platform. I'm not a Trump 'hater' at all, but there is nothing he could possibly say or do that would have me taking him over Ted Cruz in the primary.

For all the talk about how loyal Trump voters are, the support Ted Cruz has earned to this point has him out-front by ten points in Iowa now... and all of those people have already had a long, hard look at Donald Trump.

When Trump attacked those with fragile support, it was an entirely different situation that he faces in going after Ted Cruz... I'd say he's even going to have a hard time coming up with material/dirt on Senator Cruz -without sounding like Mitch McConnell- the guy is clean as a whistle and a true Reaganite... not much to pick apart there, nothing any conservatives would give a hoot about, anyway.

On top of that, Cruz probably won't take the bait, either...

New Monmouth poll released today. Trump 41% Cruz 14%. I would worry too much about Trump’s tactics. :-)

That was before any of this weekends shenanigans and before Rush nailed him today and before Levin nails him tonight and before Tuesday’s debate.

Oh, and it’s a national poll.....hardly predictive of what is going to happen. Look up predictive....

“...that Cruz agrees 100% with him its just that he has to mention everything first and then Cruz comes along.”

That would be great to see if Trump goes there. (I’m for Cruz).

I wasn’t trying to track your logic...I jumped in on an immigration comment regarding Cruz, saying that my take on Trump’s recent criticism of Cruz is different than most, that I see Trump attempting to increase his market share among non-Cruz supporters or at least to say “Your choice is Crazy Man A or Crazy Man B, so either way you have to decide between 2 guys labeled crazy.”

Now, if you can’t see argument, it’s not because I haven’t tried to explain it. This is about the 3rd time. You might not consider it a valid argument, but that’s different. I don’t know, though, because you haven’t addressed it yet. Instead, you’ve addressed your distaste for Trump. Got it.

If I were on the debate stage and wanting to seem not harsh I would say that Cruz agrees with me 100% after I suggest it first and I would also say I don’t understand how at this late date Ted Cruz still does not know what he would do with the 11-20 million illegals in this country until he secures the border. That sounds like amnesty. Those two talking points would be very effective.

I don’t know if Cruz is a boating man, but I’d be more concerned with fixing the hole in the hull than figuring on which pail to use to bail out the water. At least Cruz is getting the order right as opposed to Reagan, who granted amnesty first with the “promise” that the border would be controlled later. Still waiting. In fact, iirc, that is Cruz’s point - let’s do what the law already requires us to do - control the border.

You really don’t know what you’re talking about. The GOPe despise Cruz and will not “cozy up to him” for any reason. Big business/big government Trump is not their favorite either but poses less of a threat to the government gravy train than a conservative like Cruz.

To get rid of Trump. That’s reason enough. The left-wing media is on-board as well as you will see national press outlets start easing back on the negative articles about Cruz.

And no, the guy they calling a fascist, racist, Hitler, a Nazi, a demagogue, a bigot, an embarrassment, a clown, carnival barker, and so on. From Cheney down to Lindsy Graham.

They aren’t doing that because they feel good that he will not be a threat to the “government gravy train”. They know he’s a 100% free agent, and doesn’t owe them anything.

“That was before (insert this will get Trump for sure issue here)”

Trump’s base isn’t malleable. I’ve been saying this since last summer. The people that are there are there because they believe in what Trump represents on their own, not because someone gave them permission through an endorsement. Support through endorsements are supporters that you could not convince on your own.

It’s not there because of Limbaugh or Levin, and wont change because of them

“Oh, and it’s a national poll.....hardly predictive of what is going to happen. Look up predictive....”

Like them or not, they aren’t ALL wrong.
