While the Russians are quickly running out of money -and still can't make a decent toaster- the sky's the limit for the Kremlin when it comes to military stuff. Somehow tho there never seems to be much budget left for styling- instead, they appear to have let their video-game obsessed kids design the thing (while the dog helped).

Yet the ZIL (maker of trucks and Soviet limos) KAT is itself a microcosm of Putin's Russia... overbearing/hyper-macho, in-your-face, brutish, unpolished... not a lot of it makes sense to outsiders, yet they absolutely do not care what you think about it (or them):

The KAT weighs 4.5 tons and can carry 10 fully-armed troops. A prototype was built last year with a Cummins 4-cylinder Diesel, but the 'production' model show here has a Russian Kamaz V-8 Diesel with 700hp. The open-wheels seem a good way to avoid interior damage from any mines ran-over, as the blast would be deflected from the floorboards/passenger compartment.

The radical angle of the front sure out to deflect enemy fire well, but not sure what the thinking is behind the bullseye-red front grill... seems as idiotic as WWI French Army uniforms with their easy-to-target red pants. And if you dropped a jar of epoxy off a bridge or out a window onto that windshield it would probably be stopped cold in its tracks...

Utility vehicles are usually kinda ugly. The hummer ain’t exactly a work of art when it comes to aesthetics IMO. But hey, they’re there to do a job not win a beauty contest.

My Mom had a red AMC Pacer. Ugliest car in the world. It felt like you were driving in a fish tank. (I was beyond happy when someone slammed into the back of it!)

Oh, and and that God-awful piece of frame right at eye level in the middle of the rear window. The Aztec had to be the biggest automotive Charlie Foxtrot ever. They gave me one as a rental one time, and once I saw it, I went back inside and asked if they had anything else. ANYTHING. Sad, but no. I was stuck with that POS the whole business trip.

I am a HUGE car guy. The number of dream cars on my list is quite substantial, so I think I’m a fair judge of ugly cars.

However, to this very day, the Aztec to me looks exactly and precisely like every ohter SUV ever produced in human history. I am utterly baffled how people look at it and see something other than regulary old SUV.

It might be called Cube, but there's hardly a straight line on it. The side windows might have come from cruise ships, the hub caps are disastrous, and the grille and headlights look like a pair of cheap sunglasses.
