Just in time for Halloween, CNBC and the Republican Party treated us to the latest, and perhaps final, episode of The Walking Jeb. After Wednesdayâs debate, many are wondering if Jeb can continue or if Marco Rubio delivered the headshot that would put a zombie out of his misery.
In popular lore, there are many names for these creatures, such as walkers, biters, the infected, etc., but never zombies; even though we all know that is what they are. The reason for this is that in the shows and movies, George Romero never made Night of the Living Dead. These shows all take place in an alternate reality where there is hope for the infected, and no one knows how to deal with them until itâs almost too late. Sounds a lot like the Republican establishment, doesnât it? Meanwhile, we, and apparently an increasing amount of donors, yell âzombieâ at the screen, knowing what is coming next.
To be fair to the television and movie zombies, Jeb is not really one of them. They have a single purpose, and will not stop or sleep until they attain it, driven by an insatiable hunger that even they do not understand. This does not seem to be the case with Jeb. In fact, Jeb resembles the zombie of Haitian folklore, a mindless, unthinking henchman under a magicianâs spell â in his case, of his familyâs legacy and their donors. Animated to serve his mastersâ purposes, he will be left to wander aimlessly (or do âcool thingsâ) once he is no longer useful. You almost feel pity for him, but then you remember that he cares nothing about you.
Jeb isnât the only zombie in this show, although he is the most high profile since he was not supposed to be one in the first place. We see the other bit players, shambling around with their low poll numbers, animated only by the infection of Super-PAC money that created them. As on television, there may be sequels and spin-offs, but itâs only a matter of time until they are taken out by one of the main characters. One show that we hope to never be subject to, however, is Fear the Walking Jeb.
