'Every restaurant in America would shut down.'
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's strong stance on illegal immigration has already drawn serious backlash from the restaurant industry, and celebrity chefs José Andrés and Geoffrey Zakarian have pulled restaurants from Trump's new Washington, D.C., hotel. Now ex-cook and current world-traveling TV host Anthony Bourdain is getting into the mix. Bourdain made an appearance on SiriusXM's StandUP With Pete Dominick and defended America's undocumented workers.
I grew up in the restaurant business â 30 years in the restaurant business. I came out of, like a lot of other white kids, I rolled out of a prestigious culinary institute and went to work in real restaurants. I walked into restaurants and always, the person who had been there the longest, who took the time to show me how it was done, was always Mexican or Central American. The backbone of the industry - meaning most of the people in my experience cooking, preparing your food. Twenty of those years in this business I was an employer, I was a manager employer. Never, in any of those years, not once, did anyone walk into my restaurant â any American-born kid â walk into my restaurant and say I'd like a job as a night porter or a dishwasher. Even a prep cook â few and far between. Just not willing to start at the bottom like that.
Bourdain went on to say that if Trump were to win the presidency and deport 11 million illegal immigrants, "every restaurant in America would shut down," and restaurant owners share his sentiment because "they'd be up the creek. ... It is really, really getting hard to find people to do the jobs."

It's not the first time Bourdain has commented on Trump. He previously said The Donald "offends me" and the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City is "the enemy of the human spirit." Bourdain hasn't given his coveted endorsement for the 2016 election, but he threw his support behind Barack Obama in 2012 and 2008.
“Never, in any of those years, not once, did anyone walk into my restaurant ââ¬â any American-born kid ââ¬â walk into my restaurant and say I’d like a job as a night porter or a dishwasher.”
My son the American-born former bus boy/dishwasher will get a kick out of this.
Shut down your slaves....oh the shame... go back to the 3rd world!
We need to go back to making our own food
So they had illegal aliens working for them?
Oh, bullsh**, if I may be so polite. None of these guys help their illegal or semi-illegal dishwashers. My husband was involved in this dirty business in NYC for 23 years and no one pays them either fairly or treats them with much dignity. They barely treat their sous chefs or line cooks with any dignity or good pay.
As always, I’m amazed that NYers have no pride in a son of NYC gaining the American presidency. I guess I’m different...
Wouldn’t have an effect on any restaurant in my little neck of the cornfield except for the Mexican restaurant.
Our McD is good about hiring young kids, one has to be a white lesbian to work at our Burger King, Subway is run by Hadji, KFC seems to hire every drunk/stoner in the community, and the pizza joints are wetback free with one hiring pretty much all young hotties. (their pizza sucks, but they have a booming business)
Its not about immigrants its about illegal aliens. There is a difference.
Was he drunk when he said this? LMAO....
Anthony, if I want a meal I might take your opinion at face value. Otherwise you are food service worker with a narcissistic streak.
That's how my son started out.
He forgot to add, "for low wages". But I'll bet he's one of those libs complaining about employers not paying a "living wage". Except for his buds in the restaurant business.
Bourdain is sometimes interesting and entertaining, but he should skip the political commentary.
“Bourdain went on to say that if Trump were to win the presidency and deport 11 million illegal immigrants, “every restaurant in America would shut down,” and restaurant owners share his sentiment because “they’d be up the creek. ... It is really, really getting hard to find people to do the jobs.”
Tough ta-tas. There’s a process for being here LEGALLY. Do it. Or get out.
You're thinking of Andrew Zimmern. Tony Bourdain is a lot of things, but "flabby" he's not.
But, you forget, Bourdain treats his illegal alien dishwashers SO VERY WELL. Oh, wait...
Oh, the other hand, I can tell you for a fact that the busboys at Trump Grill love the Donald and were telling us to vote for The Donald. That’s not typical of NYC workers, I can tell you.
Anthony used to be and may still be into something more potent for recreation.
“So illegal aliens are required to make every restaurantâs business model work? Thatâs interesting.”
IIRC, people are the biggest expense a business has. If your competitors are doing it you practically have to. Bottom line rules.
Another willful idiot who can’t, or won’t, tell the difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL.
That doesn’t surprise me. He seems to be a party animal.
If there is one thing I know about the food biz and chefs. They are easily replaced and forgotten.
Anthony.
Or, 11 million legal residents and American citizens would replace them all which is what I believe.
