Nothing new about deception ops. The Russians are really good at it; “maskirovka” is almost a separate military discipline in Russia.

The pic is very reminiscent of the Maj. David Stirling WWII-era SAS in the North African desert. Whoever posed that pic may have been aware of that.

At first, I thought the picture you posted was a photo of real-life legionaires. I was struck by how handsome they were — don’t worry, I’m a woman :) — but the second thought I had was that they looked so much alike, like brothers.
Then I read about the movie version of “Beau Geste”. I suppose, even then, someone could have manipulated the photo to make those actors look more alike.
Finally some military creativity.
