There has always been a significant homosexual subculture within the Catholic clergy, at least since the Middle Ages when the policy of compulsory clerical celibacy was decreed by the Vatican. Although the policy does not cause homosexuality or pedophilia, an unintended consequence was to create an atmosphere very attractive to those who engage in such practices.
