One of my great-uncles was with A Co. 24th Alabama Infantry. KIA in the defense of Atlanta. He was eligible for a deferment, he volunteered anyway.

Two of my great grandfather’s brothers served in the 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. The family also had brothers and cousins in the 17th and 28th, and another with the CS Marines who was captured when CSS Atlanta was forced aground by 2 Yankee monitors. We lost every male member of the family 13 years or older.

I had an ancestor in the 88th Indiana Infantry. On September 20th his regiment was positioned on the McDonald farm near the Lafayette Road. He was captured during Polk’s belated attack and later died in the Andersonville, Georgia prison camp.
