Worth repeating:

Rule #4: Know your target and what is behind it.

Did that deer hunting one time. Killed the first one and knocked the one behind down. Went over and capped the one that was down and filled both tags at one time.

See #11.

Col. Cooper also noted that “enough gun” _must_ be capable of full penetration to assure a clean kill. That would leave enough energy to likely take down another, as happened.

My suggestion is that a hunter gets a get out of jail free card for the first time, but on probation for the next 10 or 15 years.

Should cover accidents, but not allow ‘gaming’.

Good argument for 6.5mm or 7mm match bullets.

Optimal results would be driving the projectile to the mid-animal to disrupt the vitals and drop the critter. I don’t recall reading Cooper say much different, as driving the round clean through both sides of the critter will leave a pelt with an extra hole! ;) Perhaps it depends on the game at hand and its dangerosity.

Damn!

And here I thought that for a crime charge to be valid there must be the element of intent!

More often than not you don't see the second animal.

You can always buy one of those reality "freeze" devices that stops everything, and then run over there and check...

Not getting your point.

Bullets tend to go thru things. If it does, you’d darned well better know what it’s likely to hit next.
And yes, while hunting you can know, and know when you don’t know.

“More often than not you don’t see the second animal. “

Animals don’t understand the cover vs. concealment thing.

Col. Cooper always said, “Use enough gun!”
Perhaps, too much gun, or maybe a really thin first caribou?

Maxim 34: If you're leaving scorch marks, you need a bigger gun.

Know what is behind your target.

About 47 OTHER caribou, and they are usually running.

I would like to know how this is a story worthy of being reported??

It was a headline article in Alaska's largest (by a few orders of magnitude) newspaper.

And it sounds like you may already know the political leanings of the Alaska Dispatch News.
