And the stuff is still slimy.

Gefilte fish is NOT slimy. That is the fish gelatin it's bottled in.

Gefilte means "stuffed" in Yiddish. Originally, several types of fish (usually carp, whitefish, and mullet) were ground up with onions, carrots, matzoh meal and spices, and then stuffed back into the skin of a whole fish, then baked. This was because it is prohibited to separate flesh from bones on the Sabbath, a corollary of the prohibition of separating different types of things. So, to enjoy the delicious-ness of fish on the Sabbath, gefilte fish was created. Nowadays, it is not stuffed back into a whole fish skin but merely shaped into balls or sliced from a loaf. However way you slice it, gefilte fish is DELISH. Garnish it with a small dollop of ground horseradish or horseradish ground with beets (the "pink" kind of horseradish) or a spot of mayonnaise, and it is simply yum. However, I think it's probably an acquired taste.
