Today Andrea Rossi was granted a patent on his LENR based heating device the E-Cat. I have not yet had time to study the patent further, but I just wanted to make it available here on the blog as soon as possible. Note that LENR is not mentioned explicitly, but also note that the contents of the fuel mix are specified — lithium and lithium aluminium hydride as fuel and “a group 10 element, such as nickel in powdered form” as the catalyst. This is important since fuel and catalyst specifications have been lacking from earlier patent applications by Rossi on the E-Cat, as far as I know. Patents have sure changed. There is almost no detail provided.
In a Robert Heinlein novel, he wrote of a future inventor and company that developed a power source that was extremely small and powerful. They did not even apply for a patent, preferring to keep their process secret because even though it could be taken apart and analyzed, the secret was in the assembly process. Their competitors could not replicate their processes even though they could copy the device down to the smallest part. They became the Microsoft of power sources and became multi trillionaires with their hands in just about any business imaginable. Their device could power a home, a car or a spaceship, depending on its size.
Maybe Rossi is crazy or maybe he’s a con man, but just having a patent does not mean it will work or even be profitable........................

Ummm, I’m not seeing any reference to cold fusion in the US patent...
Not much different than government I suppose.
I can’t wait to go down to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy a nice portable 7.5kW Rossi E-Cat generator for my home ...
If it’s truly a revolutionary device, they will be everywhere in short order..............................

He has his patent ... he's pretty much out of excuses.
It's put up or shut up time for Rossi.
He has, time and again, refused to let independent tests be performed on the device. This could be a sign of a con job or a shrewd paranoid inventor. Either way, it must be tested by someone not connected with the project...............................
Still waiting, not so excited now.
Keep in mind that “it actually works” is not a criterium for patentability.
The criteria are: Novelty, non-obviousness, and industrial applicability; the latter being more of theoretical criterium meaning it can be made or used in industry (and is not tested).

Why?
There is no claim of cold fusion in the patent. The explanations, drawings and claims simply describe the device and grossly, describe its construction.
I see no claims or descriptions that tell me what it does except very general description of it as a “heat transfer” device.
More data is needed to know what it means.
According to the Wikipedia article on the E-Cat, Rossi intervened during the test of October 2014 during fueling, tart-up and removal of spent ash fuel. could be some shenanigans going on:
In October 2014 a non-peer-reviewed paper by the same authors as the May 2013 report describes results from evaluations in March 2014 of an upgraded version of the E-Cat which runs at higher temperatures. Unlike previous demonstrations, the test was carried out with monitoring equipment and in a laboratory not supplied by Rossi, and was run over an extended duration (32 days).[66] However, as with the previous report, the authors were not in full control of the process; Rossi intervened during the insertion of the fuel charge, start up of the reactor, shut down of the reactor, and extraction of the spent fuel. Overall, the total excess heat measured was calculated to be well beyond that possible by any conventional, non-nuclear source. In this report, they present analyses of samples of spent fuel, concluding from the isotopes found that “nuclear reactions are therefore indicated to be present in the run process, which however is hard to reconcile with the fact that no radioactivity was detected outside the reactor during the run.” Following fuel and ash isotopic analysis, the authors speculate that isotopes of especially nickel and lithium being part of the reaction, in particular transmutation of 58Ni and 60Ni to 62Ni, and from 7Li to 6Li through some unknown process.
But, that doesn’t mean I am not supportive, just skeptical until a full independent test is accomplished.......................

Rossi made demonstrations and permitted tests by third parties but insisted on restrictions that undermined his credibility because tricks of one sort or another could not be entirely excluded. Over time though, the tests became more stringent and persuasive, and Rossi’s device passed due diligence testing by his US financial partners. Apparently, their strategy aims at combining the rollout of a first run production model and publication of a detailed physics theory in a peer-reviewed journal. There will then be a scramble as Rossi and his partners have to cope with copycats, competitors, and patent litigation.
He’ll have the money to do it should everything be on the Up and Up....................
