Update on new law on smoking in cars and other vehicles with someone under 18.
From 1 October 2015 it will be illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicles) with anyone under 18 present. The law is changing to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales, including those aged 17 and those with a provisional driving licence. The law does not apply if the driver is 17 years old and is on their own in the car.
Every time a child breathes in secondhand smoke, they breathe in thousands of chemicals. This puts them at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia. It can also make asthma worse.
The law applies to any private vehicle that is enclosed wholly or partly by a roof. It still applies if people have the windows or sunroof open, have the air conditioning on, or if they sit in the open doorway of the vehicle. The law wont apply to a convertible car with the roof completely down.

Makes you wonder how any of us grew up.
But the age of sexual consent in the UK is 14.
And if the 14 yo just had sex in a car,can they both smoke?
It was 10 during the Victorian era, IIRC.
Ontario has had this law since 2009, Ontarians can not smoke in a motor vehicle with passengers under 16.
A vehicle ,on Ontario’s major highway 401 east of Toronto , was pulled over and the driver was charged for smoking with a 15 year old passenger in the vehicle.
While the officer was writing up the ticket the 15 yr old passenger exited the vehicle and proceeded to light up a cigarette and smoke it. Only one fine issued, that was the one for the driver for smoking while the 15 yr old smoker was in the vehicle.
Mixed thoughts on it. I grew up in an era when kids were regularly subjected to being in rooms/cars with smokers but I wouldn’t smoke in a closed area with kids in it today. Heck, I wouldn’t smoke in my own house or car with nobody else around because I don’t like the smell it leaves behind. Smoking is my last real vice and I really need to dump it.
That's so Lord Fondleboy could diddle the children of the help.
Nanny government at work. is there a fine for passing gas in car with any one under age in it?? will that be next. How about eating?
About 40 years too late for me (My parents, as well as my carpooling buddy’s father, smoked with the windows rolled down).
Looks like the kids will be walking to school.
It is illegal in the State of California, as well.
This should be interesting.
While I’ve never smoked, most of my girlfriends in high school and early college—ages 14 to 18—did.
Everything is illegal in California.
The Brown shirts have spoken!!!
Yeah.... That’s going to work!
