A broadcast station widely listened to by blacks in the 50s and 60s was powerful WLAC out of Nashville. I bet FReeper fieldmarshaldj remembers that!
The announcer playing the R&B music of that era was John R. who always kicked off his show with Way down South in Dixie! The blacks tuned in to his program, who listened far and wide both in the north and South, didn't object one bit.

Well, remember, I wasn’t around in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but I’ve heard of WLAC (it became a talk radio station later, broadcasting Rush Limbaugh, et al).
It’s still there today, turns 90 years old next year (November 2016).
