There is a Ferguson, Missouri, that most Americans know: The town where a police shooting triggered violent protests, a federal civil rights investigation and a national debate on law enforcement's treatment of minorities.
But then there is the Ferguson that new arrivals see: cheap housing, a diverse population and vibrant community activism.
That second vision is helping to keep the city's struggling real estate market alive.
A year after Michael Brown's death tore Ferguson apart, homes are selling, but at a slower pace. Prices have dropped, but the $50,000 median price so far this year is on par with 2013, according to data provided by agents.
Among those moving in are young families and single strivers, fueling hope for the small city's rebound.
Here are some of their stories....

The place looks like a dump to me sorry unless there is a more desirable neighborhood.
“Here are some of their stories..”
STORY 1: Well, I was walking down Main Street and I greeted this colored young man with good morning. He then calls me a “honky cracker” and throws a punch at me. He went running down the nearest KFC, calls his friends and started burning my car.
Unfortunately, I’m the enemy in Ferguson so I doubt I’ll be moving there anytime soon.
I would be scared to drive through Ferguson. It is not because of race. It is because of violence. They’re scary in the way they think and behave. No thank you.
Much better weather in Compton. A bit more expensive though. Just get half a dozen renters to move in to help offset the cost.
NBC execs planning to move there?
Lots of properties I could by up for cheap in neighboring Oakland.
But, then I’d have to deal with those willing to live in the ghetto.
No, thanks.
These are selling points now? I was just getting usd to "cozy" and "lots of potential" as selling points.
cheap housing: +1
diverse population: 0 (neutral)
vibrant community activism: -100
Net result: -99
Well sure. But you only had to pay $30,000 for your house! (Hmmm - too bad they didn’t burn down your house. Might have been cheaper than your car.)
I wonder how many of the newcomers are young white idealistic do-gooders? If they are, I hope that it works out well for them and they can bring some real change. Although I’m guessing that is just wishful thinking.
Pathetic. You have to be certifiable or suicidal to move there.
Can I buy life insurance on one of these people to finance my retirement?
Darwin’s waiting room.
I understand today Compton is primarily Hispanic.
Story 2. I used to drive by Ferguson, on my way to or from Joplin, MO and Indiana. I was always on I-270, because there was no way—I’d be screwy to try and drive through east St. Louie, and I always made sure I was gassed up in Illinois, because I wasn’t pulling off 270 unless I saw people being raptured. And even then I was chambering a round.
I can put you in a sweet victorian 2 story in Detroit for $8.23
“a diverse population and vibrant community activism.”
That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, a town with “vibrant community activism”, aka, thugs.
because they foreclosed on your condo in Falluhah.
A young white idealistic do-gooder friend of mine bought a townhouse in a really (and I mean really) bad part of a town that's close to where I live.
I asked her how things where going. "I'm not hearing as many gunshots as I used to," she replied. At first, I thought she was trying to be funny. She wasn't.
