Because FDR's New Deal was a steaming pile of crap that didn't do anything for the economy. It took a world war to do that, but his New Deal policies got credit for the eventual recovery. Now they're faced with the same thing with Obama's economic lunacy and a wartime economy is the only thing that'll be able to salvage his legacy.

This isn’t about control of government today. It is to ensure that x years from now the only ones controlling government are Democrats. They did this with Clinton and Bush. With Carter and Reagan.

Kerry because he hates Americans (guilt over his own "Jenjis Khan" behaviour in Viet Nam (whatever it was in reality, and not his accusations against other Americans)), and Obama because he is an atheist Muslim Communist race-baiting scrawny metrosexual of (half)-color who grew up without a father.
Obama has fantasies of retiring to Hawaii with a coterie of bodyguards, thinking that will keep him safe from a North Korean suicide squad or Iranian missile attack; Kerry is just too *stupid* to realize that whether in DC or Boston, he'll likely be part of the Iranian-induced mushroom cloud, and if not that, still subject to the same EMP as the rest of us.
