Trump Fans, Its Time for An Intervention
by JONAH GOLDBERG July 11, 2015
The following is Jonah Goldbergs weekly newsletter, the G-File. Subscribe here to get the G-File delivered to your inbox on Fridays. Dear Reader (and those of you with better things to do), There have been times in the past when Ive gotten crosswise with certain segments of the conservative base and/or with the readership of National Review. And, because, like the Elephant Man, I am a not an animal but a human being, I have always had at least some self-doubt. Thats as it should be.
People who share principles should not only hear each other out when they disagree; they should be able to see each others points and hold open the possibility that ones opponents have the better argument. This is not one of those times, at least not for me. I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trumps most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake.
I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. Im watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage.

I wish I knew what the truth is re: Trump.
Regardless, what is the worst that can happen if he is elected? You think he will want to destroy the US like O does?
lol
Trump has never had a conservative position in his life.
Trump’s idea of business is to pay off politicians to keep out competition and use eminent domain to take peoples property.
DITTO
I’ve been saying “you can’t have a country without borders” for years.
More recently it has also occurred to me that a pretend country like ours shouldn’t be taxing it’s residents or making more laws etc. You know the things congress and now oblamer with his fone n’ pen live for.
So which candidate will DEPORT these people (i.e., the hard-working illegals, who otherwise haven’t broken the law)?
Who?
“He still favors amnesty for the illegals who are illegally stealing American jobs, he says those who are working can stay.”
So which candidate will pluck out these workers, put them on buses and send them home?
Who?
“Trump says if an illegal gets an illegal job (because thats now breaking 2 laws at least) they can stay.”
I haven’t heard Cruz say otherwise, or Jeb, or Walker, or Hillary, or Sanders.
Who has said differently?
Who?
“E-Verify needs to be mandated for all US jobs! All US benfits should be restricted to US citizens and a strong e-verify put into place. This is the position of Senator Ted Cruz, by the way”
Ok, so now an answer. What exactly is Cruz’s plan? Is he going to send people to the work sites and the fields and start running E-Verify? If so provide me a link. If not, then who will do that?
Who?
“Regardless, what is the worst that can happen if he is elected? You think he will want to destroy the US like O does?”
I do not believe his effort to be sincere, but to respect the question’s premise I see “it” being at-best what could be expected from a big government, Wall Street-friendly Republican ... good for the economy, status quo constitutionality (2007ish) and rule of law.
...if he were to win the GE. But just watch, he will not complete the cycle, circa Ross Perot.
“Senator Ted Cruz wants a strong e-verify and he wants benefits only for US citizens. This is exactly the right approach.”
Will Ted Cruz deport? If so, please provide us a link. If not please tell us who will deport these people.
Who?
Aside from Trump’s serial hypocrisy on the issue of immigration, abortion, and gay marriage (Read the full Jonah Goldberg article) he surely has succeeded in putting this at the top of the list. And that’s a good idea. He is forcing the other candidates to put up or shut up. Note the silence of Jeb and Rubio on the sanctuary city mess.
That said, he may be sucking all the oxygen away from the nascent Ted Cruze campaign, taking the spotlight off the Obama failures, the disastrous gay marriage ruling, and the Iran nuclear talks where Kerry is begging on one knee for a deal.
I like Trump, not because I think he would make a good POTUS, but because by being straight, saying what *he* thinks, and calling out the utterly spineless weaklings among the Republicans, he performs an essential service.
He does not mouth brainless niceties about how the Republicans must pursue a “big tent” approach, even though it has failed miserably in past. The “big tent” approach makes most Republican rank and file cringe, because they know it is a lie.
You attract people to support you by what you *do*, not by endlessly blathering that you are their friend, except when push comes to shove, you aren’t.
He also calls the Democrat pigs what they are: pigs. They are the racists. They are the corrupt and greedy. They are the ones who cheat whenever they can. They are the real oppressors. etc. And when Democrats are exposed for what they are, they squeal like stuck pigs.
It makes most Republican leaders sick to their stomach to attack the Democrats with the truth. Instead they want to pretend to be nice, no matter how offensive the Democrats behave. No matter who and how many Americans they hurt.
We want a fighter, a brawler. Not people who moan and fret about the idea of fighting. Empty suits. Straw men. Spineless and yellow and weak.
As long as Donald Trump does that, he makes it much harder for the weaklings to ascend, and makes it easier for strong candidates to push past them.
Translation: "Trump is talking about things that make us GOPe's look bad and it needs to stop before we lose our power in the party."
Exactly.
Sorry, and it doesnt seem popular on FR, but I like Trump. I look at the rest and I see career politicians...lord knows we have tried that...even tried the community organizer type...didnt work. So I want someone that understands economies and jobs..and someone who is A$$hole enough to FIRE the EPA and welfare slackers. Not sure I want him for a friend, next door neighbor, or dinner partner...but wouldnt be worried about him being the one to tell Putin to get the hell out of the Ukraine, tell Iran to stop with the bomb research or be bombed back to the Stone Age they never seem to have left. He isnt perfect, none are, but I think we need some kicka$$ and I dont see that in the rest of the field.

I really think that he’s so popular right now because he’s NOT a politician.
It’s a welcome relief to have an American stand up and unashamedly speak without all the ‘polish’ and dancing around.
I don’t think he’ll be president, but (if he makes it through the nomination) I’ll vote for him just for the laugh. He can’t do more damage than Obama or Hillary.
Right, so now conspiracies are cool. Got it. Please tell me again when they are not cool. We were conned when McCain suspended his campaign. Everything since then has been a con.
Oh, stop it. He’s just ‘evolving’... /s
Did Jonah call Obama a “con-man” in 2008?
