This is the Game of Thrones S05E09 discussion thread. If you haven't seen this episode yet there may be spoilers here.
Does that happen in the book?!!?
I don't think that Happens in the Book!!!
SPOILERS!
Stannis Would NEVER Sacrifice Shireen !!!
IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!!
His One and Only Heir!?
I am starting to think the Producers of this Show don't like Stannis and what us to Root for Dany, The Problem is that Dany is Always in need of Rescuing!!!!
Bah! This Season has defiantly been a Bane for the series. For the First Time I am officially not excited for the next Episode or Season, it's a Shame, because it promises to be lots of Cearsi Humiliation.
The Sansa Rape scene was bad, But this!? Taking such a Sharp turn for Shock Value because the Fan Base took a liking to Character? (Opps, gotta show him do something bad! We were rehabilitating his image, can't have that, he is gonna do something bad, otherwise, you will root Against the Boltons WAY too much in the final fight)
I Do Not Approve >:(
[SPOILERS] Princess Shireen was left at Castle Black in the books. She's still alive [/SPOILERS]
That scene was horrifying. The mother didn’t even seem that convincing. That is not the man who went to the ends of the earth to stop the gray scale. I hope this offering is a massive failure and that someone with some heart turns on him. Perhaps the man she taught to read..
WHY!?!? WHY!?!? WHY!?!? WHY!?!?
Actually I can tell you why, Because the Writers for some reason do not like Stannis, so they gotta show him do this Really Bad Thing BEFORE he takes on these Really Bad People in Winterfell.
For you know, Drama.
Same Reason We Had to Rape Sansa. >:(
If they needed to Pad out the Season, why no show him Liberating the North From Bolton Rule and Gathering all the Stark Loyalists? Surely there are still some, Really Build that Up for the Final Attack on Winterfell with the Whole of the North Behind Him?
OPPS! Can't to something Cool like that, blew our Budget on Dany Riding Drogon.
Umm... Lets just have Stannis make Camp instead and have him Sacrifice Shireen so we have one less Actress to pay >:(
Maybe you should read them so that you know what the truth is.
I loved watching Dany ride Drogon. That was awesome!
But to address the scene of Shireen.
That isn’t something that occurred in the books, at least not yet so, it is difficult to comprehend where that is leading.
Assuming that what we saw was real and not some sort of glamour, which is a possibility though not likely I think, the character of Stannis has moved to the dark side.
He has snuffed out the only bright light in his life, and he will suffer as a result and should.
He failed to realize that he is in the company of a ghoul, Melissandre, and in his lust for power, he consumed all that was good in him.
I expect that he will die at the hands of Ser Davos, one of the very few truly good characters in this world.
I find it hard to believe that what we saw was real, however, for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, in the books there are clear examples of things occurring that are not what they appear to be, and those things involve Melissandre. Perhaps that is the case here, but there is no way for me to know at this time.
Secondly, if what we saw happen tonight is real and this is the true Stannis, then he has revealed himself to be even worse than Ramsay Bolton, and that is a long, long way to fall.
So I will be interested to see if in fact Stannis is the darkest man in all of Westeros. I hope that isn’t the case.
That was a very tough scene to watch.
Well, don't ever read any Greek tragedies. Mothers kill their children to spite their husbands, sons kill their dads and marry mom...
What if she dies in the later books? Then her death in this episode simply streamlines the plot for the show.
>> I only see one problem — the guy with greyscale clasped hands with the Queen to seal the deal<<
Ser Jorah Friendzone...lol...poor guy just can’t catch a break. Anyway, couple things:
1) Greyscale is on his left arm, he used his right.
2) Targaryans are biologically incredibly resistant to disease. In the book she basically waltzed through the camp of Bloody Flux poxy death and didn’t fall ill - and Bloody Flux is HIGHLY contagious.
This is SO out of Character for Stannis, just for Shock Value and giving the Audience a Reason to Root Against him.
(CONJECTURE! but not like that matters much anymore with the direction they are going)
But I am starting to think that they had Stannis do that so we can justify Brienne of Tarth Killing Him when she goes to Rescue Sansa, her getting distracted by her revenge "fur da Renlys" and much Like a Parallel they are doing with Ayra being distracted with her Mission.
A plausible conjecture, for sure. I believe that Stannis meets his end in TWOW, and your theory works well to satisfy that end, and it just consolidates some storylines.
Stannis is the ultimate sufferer of “middle child syndrome”, and his quest for the Iron Throne has caused him to spiral downward in a very bad way.
Much like with Sansa, she was promised to be this Big Power Player now under Littlefinger's tutelage, but no. He ships her off to the Boltons to be used as a Pawn.
Despite the Promises, Sansa isn't a Person, she's just a Weapon, to be used by whoever can wield her name the Best.
Dare I say it creates so disturbing undertones of where (the writers? produces?) minds are at, Sansa Being Raped, Shireen being burned, that A-Hole Kings Guard in Braavos being a Pedophile.
All in ONE Episode.
i bet she isn’t dead, i bet she rises from the flames like whats her name dragon mother.
at least i hope so.
Watch the HBO Go episode wrap up — it was George’s idea.
Davis won’t kill his King. Best he could do is resign and leave.
Talk about Spoilers!
Sansa wasn’t raped in last night’s episode :O
But furthermore, in the books Sansa was never raped. She was never even at Winterfell.
Her character has been merged with another lesser character in the tv series, but in the books what the lesser character went through on her wedding night was worse than what happened to Sansa.
But the merging of these characters works pretty well on TV, because it gives the character of Sansa an opportunity to grow. In the books she is just kind of lost riding around somewhere where we do not know with Littlefinger, so this is more effective.
Have to realize that if you are married off to Ramsay Bolton, you probably are not going to have a fun time.
Ser Meryn Trant has always been a monster. He trided to murder Tyrion on the Blackwater while Tyrion was saving King’s Landing from Stannis.
And as far as Stannis goes, if he did in fact burn to death his lovely daughter while he stood there and watched just to aid his quest for the throne, then he is the worst man of them all.
There is no greater villain than Stannis at this point.
OOOoooh child! Even the worst mother in the world tried 2 stop u #Stannis @GameOfThrones

But that is what I am saying, Sansa was never Raped, Stannis never Burned Shireen.
I don't think this plot line with Sansa improved her at all, it tossed out her Character Development right out the window, and she is back to being a Helpless Victim AGAIN.
No More Grown or well rounded than when Joffery had Meryn Trant beat her in in Season 2(?)
WARNING QUOTE FROM WINDS OF WINTER SPOILERS: (Highlight to read)
/Spoilers: It may be that we shall lose this battle," the king said grimly. "In Braavos you may hear that I am dead. It may even be true. You shall find my sellswords nonetheless."
The knight hesitated. "Your Grace, if you are dead
"You will avenge my death, and seat my daughter on the Iron Throne. Or die in the attempt
Does that sound like a man who will Burn his Own Daughter? That is from The Winds of Winter, a quote from Stannis while he's stranded in a valley forge esque nightmare scenario countless miles away from the wall and Shireen.
If Shireen gets burned in the books it will have to be The Red Witch or Selyse. Stannis isn't logistically capable of doing it.
/End Spoiler
In the TV series I had always thought Sansa’s character was really always kind of aloof and stupid.
I was never particularly impressed with it. I’ve always been an Arya fan.
But it seemed like after she dyed her hair dark that she sort of matured.
And while yes she is still a victim in Winterfell, she seems more engaged and aware of her predicament, and I have been able to appreciate Sophie Turner’s portrayal of Sansa quite a bit more than in other seasons.
As far as Stannis goes, I am definitely perplexed by what happened. That is why I am trying to entertain the possibility that we did not see what we thought we saw.
I really hope that is the case, because if not, Stannis is a true monster.
Even more so than the White Walkers IMO.
He and his forces should be feared more than any other, because here is a man who will watch his own daughter burn in the pursuit of power.
I mean, even Darth Vader didn’t do s*** like that!
