This is the Game of Thrones S05E07 discussion thread. If you haven't seen this episode yet there may be spoilers here.
Ahh—That makes more sense. I knew she looked familiar, but couldn’t place her.
That scene is one of my favorites!
“What is Gold and Name to a Religious Fanatic?”
This question reminded me the Iron Throne is deep in debt to The Iron Bank of Braavos. In the first season, Ned Stark was named Hand of the King and was surprised to find the Iron Throne was deep in debt. Later, when Tyrion became theMaster of Coin, Littlefinger advised Tyrion to remember that it’s only numbers.
The Iron Bank of Braavos needs a Lannister to control the Iron Throne to get its money bank. Cersei had to be removed because she could care less whether or not The Iron Bank of Braavos gets their money back.
If Tommen doesn’t work out, the Iron Bank of Braavos will probably install Arya Stark on the Iron Throne to get their money back. If not, Tyrion is aware of the Iron Throne’s debt and may advise Dany to assure the Iron Bank of Braavos she will pay the debt if she takes the Iron Throne.
Stannis has already ask for a loan from Iron Bank of Braavos and he was rejected. Also, Stannis was unable to articulate a plan to pay of the Iron Throne’s debt if he took the Iron Throne.
Stannis was rejected initially by the Iron Bank, but they changed their mind after the speech by Ser Davos.
Okay, I was thinking Stannis went broke when he retreated from the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Apparently, the Iron Bank loaned Stannis money after that to hire the pirate a second time.
Yes, he lost a lot of men and ships at the Battle of Blackwater Bay, but he (Ser Davor) was able to convince the Iron Bank to give him money to hire more men and ships. In the most recent episode, they spoke of some mercenaries who deserted them due to the weather. Stannis mentioned something about them only valuing money.
Daenerys was watching this unfold and seemed to take a lot of interest in this hero who could defeat without killing and one could see her blood start to boil. Oooops, the helmet comes off and she's dead in the eyes.
While I know the power of Banks, believe me I work at one.
I am actually reminded of a Scene from The Dark Knight Rises

Money, Banks and Authorities doesn't count for much in the face of True Belief.
The Tyrells/Iron Bank is meaningless to a Believer like the High Sparrow.
I’ve finished Book 5, and maybe I missed something, but I just don’t see what the point is of Jorah taking Tyrion to Dany. What possible leverage could she hold with having Tyrion?
I know he’s a wanted man in Westeros, but so what? Dany could turn him in, for what...gold? She wants to (eventually, hopefully) conquer Westeros, not partner with it...what good would this bargaining chip do?
I just don’t see the point of it. What am I missing?
(Note: this is besides the point that I subscribe to the “Tyrion is the 3rd head of the dragon” theory)
Her face was all that was left < |:P~
I don’t think it’s about leverage. It could be about revenge (the Lannisters/Baratheons are responsible for killing most of her family and removing the Targaryans from power).
It’s more likely about knowledge/intel. Tyrion has nothing now, and he is blamed for the death of King Joffrey. But, he has lots of knowledge about Kings Landing, the Lannisters, as well as military forces and alliances in Westeros. Tyrion hates his sister and wants revenge on her. It’s entirely plausible to me that he would want to join with Dany to help take Cersei down.
Very true, but lets not forget about the Faceless Men. Who do they work for? Would the Iron Bank hire them to assassinate people who get in the way of getting their money back? Probably wouldn’t influence the High Sparrow, but it could possibly be a way to get rid of him if he proves to be too bothersome.
Good logic, Sven! Thanks for sharing.
Makes sense. Thanks Sven!
