LINDENHURST, N.Y. (PIX11) Suffolk County police are investigating a possible hate crime targeting an African-American family in Lindenhurst.
Ronica Copes, a resident of the suburban neighborhood, received a letter saying YOU DONT BELONG HERE and other hateful words on Thursday.
Understandably so, she was disappointed at the sight of the hateful letter.
Unbelievable but then its not our daily reality, Ive just never seen it in this form, Copes posted on Facebook.
The writer of the flyer who says Lidenhurst is 84 percent white urges Copes in bold capital letters to LEAVE AS SOON SHE CAN because IT WILL BE BETTER FOR ALL OF US.
The racist letter gained the attention of county executive Steven Bellone, who lashed out against the author of the flyer in a statement Friday.
To the coward who committed a hate crime against an innocent family in Lindenhurst There is no place for intolerance in Suffolk County. I know the Suffolk County Police Department will do everything possible to solve this hate crime, out you and see you punished. I stand together with all Lindenhurst residents who decry this act of hatred. This community and all of Suffolk County are better than that.
While police continue their investigation, Copes is thankful for the support shes received during the ordeal.
Thank you all for sharing your frustrations, opinions, suggestions, and concerns! she said. Will keep you abreast of the outcome.
Yeah, why the respectful “African American” I am not so sure this is real. Not at all.
I never believe stuff like this that makes the news.
Never.
Someone wants trouble and publicity and that someone is getting it.
.
So, did the other 16% likewise get hate-letters? Why would racists focus on this one family, and ignore the other 16%
Regards,
Agreed. HOAX!!! And what’s most suspicious, this is probably the deepest-blue area of the country...you ever hear of nonsense like this happening in Utah or Oklahoma? ;)
I am skeptical too. This sounds a fishy as any recent such hoax. If it were on a college campus, I would be almost sure it was a hoax.
>> Tawana Brawley or real?
Likely real unfortunately.
The atheist weighs in... Thanks for your continued ignorance.
Could be a hoax.
Must be an old stamp if it's a lickable.
Hoax. Without a doubt.
If this is Lindenhurst, Long Island we’re talking about - it was 98.1% white in 2010, but the public school population was only 80% white (typical of Long Island, which is rapidly browning because of low white birthrates + white outmigration).
The text of the letter and the way it was produced and delivered makes a hoax very likely. What cinches it is the over-the-top reaction of the county executive. His obvious glee at discovering a “racist” to chase after is the desired effect of the letter writer.
My guess. the recipient is the author.
Racism is a fact of life. It’s simply a reflection of the fact that we prefer the company of people who share our values. Even if humans mixed to the point where we were all the same color, we’d divide among other lines (religion, class, etc.) That’s just life.
LOL!

It is called freedom of association, and is a basic human right.
Given the number of fake incidents of this nature over the last 10 years or so, if I were a betting man, I’d have to go with fake.
My bet would be on yet another “feel sorry for me” hoax.
Putting the letter in a mailbox makes it a federal crime.
But they’re calling it a hate crime, which is something different.
