In possibly the dumbest article to ever be written, Gawker author and NYU teacher Josephine Livingstone called for the banning of men from moderating literary reading.
The article is titled Ban Men from Literary Readings and is literally several paragraphs of sexist ramblings, comments on the fact that many men are straight, and stereotypes.
Ms. Livingstones piece begins with her complaining that, at a book-reading, that a moderator didnt choose her to ask a question.
Theres a procession of question-askers, she writes, professors, grad students, writers, editors, self-appointed smart guys. Well-intentioned, each one. She adds, for no discernible reason, The vast majority are straight. Some are even married.
...Women, according to Ms. Livingstone, are taught by society to not raise their hands, even when they know an answer. This self-censoring behavior, once learned at school, seems to stay with young women and other groups outside the white-dude enclave well into adulthood.
...Her answer to these problems? This, then, must be the real demand of those who moderate readings: fire the moderators. Stop asking famous men to host your book launch on the vague assumption that theyll draw a crowd.
This is her last paragraph in its entirety:
One day, perhaps, we all shall be on that slightly raised stage in front of some fixed mics, and frail old men will clamor for our attention and for hardbacked copies of our works. Hear me now, [expletive]? well shriek at them, feedback ringing through the bookstore aisles. Do you hear me now?

Agreed.
His hair is longer than I pictured.
Garth is much cuter ;)
The majority of med students and law students today are female.
Amazing how they got there being too timid to raise their hands.
That IS a dude, and he's trying to help us all get out of those inane emotion-fest literary readings that we never wanted to attend in the first place. Now women can feel like they "claimed" them from us by force, and we can stay home and belch and scratch and watch the game while they sit around in circles and raise their hands proudly and without fear of a male seeing them do it. Brilliant!
I’m guessing the brute who had the temerity not to ask her for her question made the right decision.
Party on, Wayne.
Stop giving money to colleges! Until we build the B Ark we’re stuck having them around, but at least we can separate them from our children.
Where on earth did she go to school? Islamic countries? Women and men have always raised their hands and competed in schools when I was in school many many years ago.
