Our Corgi is so smart...she has manipulated us into providing free room, board and health insurance for life.
My border collie actually attempts to herd my two cats, and my two teenage sons, and even me. Their herding instinct is really powerful. They look at their family as their herd of sheep. Very good dogs.

Border Collies are intelligent, but were bred to be responsive to humans.
Other breeds - equally intelligent or more so - are bred to use their intelligence independently of instruction.
They independently decide what is best - in their opinion.
I’ve come to believe we confuse our view of intelligence and responsive obedience.
They’re all great.

Smartest one I ever knew was my dog Digger, she was
a Blue Heeler/Aussy Shepard. Very intelligent.
My shop gate was on wheels and instead of just pushing
it open, she would put her paw on the wheel and roll it
open. Digger, miss you girl.
I've had Schnauzer owners assert that they are the smartest dogs in the cosmos.
My boyhood dog was a red coon hound and I can't attest that he was super smart, but he was a wily alpha male who I discovered was the leader of a gang of dogs in the neighborhood - I got to the bus stop early one morning and suddenly, a pack of 6-7 dogs popped out of the woods running my way and they didn't look friendly. I thought I was in for a really bad time when I noticed that the lead dog looked familiar in the gloom - I called his name and he just about wore off his male parts sliding to a stop on the road; and the rest stopped and looked confused as they watched him change from head dog to "pansy".
He was a loyal dog and would put up with all sorts of indignities with the family and would not hesitate to defend us - can't ask for much more in a dog.
I have had many breeds of dogs all of whom have wonderful qualities. As a kid I had some sort of terrier mutt and she lived to be almost 18 years of age and was a perfect companion for us kids. I have bred akitas and found them to be a noble animal, wonderfully protective and full of common sense.
I have bred border collies and the female was docile and a homebody but the male not only looked like the cartoon character Sylvester the cat but had worse morals. He cost me a fortune in gynecological bills for every bitch in the neighborhood whom he knocked up. He was so intelligent it was impossible to keep them in the house if he smelt something intriguing even a couple of miles away. He would simply jailbreak and come back bedraggled at dawn. He was the son of the world champion border collie and he certainly was top-of-the-line but not to be recommended as a house pet. He was donated to a farm here in Bavaria where he could herd cows and horses to his heart's content-an instinct in this breed which is remarkable to watch.

Hmm, can’t believe they didn’t mention the Belgian Malinois. We’ve owned a couple of German Shepherds and one Belgian Malinois. I know that’s not a very large sample size, but our German Shepherds were very smart and the Malinois is at least their equal. The police and military wouldn’t use them if they weren’t one of the smartest dogs out there... So here’s a vote for the Belgian Malinois!
My neighbor’s cocker spaniel is the stupidest dog ever. My dad’s foxhound was very smart.
I live alone with my young old son and I am determined he and I will have a dog this year. I just love Border Collies and my heart is set on getting a border collie pup.
That said, I’m concerned about having an environment where our Border Collie can thrive as I know the breed is one of working dogs and I’ve read that Border Collies that sit home get really depressed. Their self-esteem and dignity is all about working.
I am planning to visit some sheep farms and see if I can rent a space for occasional herding and farm work. I’m thinking of advertising to others to bring their herding dogs for weekend exercises.

German Shepherd intelligent, loyal, wants to please it’s owner. Owner must establish alpha with alpha male early on then you won’t find a better dog.
