Why is no one reporting on this... the government is the preferred conduit for identity thieves.
That happened to me last year. I requested to know who it was, were they prosecuted and what exact information of mine did they have and use to file a fraudulent return in my name. I was told I would never find out.
My thoughts are it’s an inside job within the IRS. It is prevalent enough that they have all of the forms ready for such a situation. We stupid serfs are just supposed to take it.
I have my return prepared only because I don’t trust my poor eyesight and math skills. My tax guy told me about this fraud and obtained a password to be used with the IRS. Supposedly, this password would identify the return filed on my behalf as the correct one and any attempt to file without the password would be rejected.
It did take longer than expected to obtain my refund. I wonder if someone did try to file a phony return under my name and SS number. Never heard anything about it, so I don’t know what the holdup was.
Great. Now, an IRS insider can REALLY steal your identity.
This also happened to a friend of mine yesterday.
1. Always file a paper return. It will take longer to get a refund but is much safer.

I have absolutely no problems with your statement and I mean absolutely none!!
Our tax Accountant told us how the fraud works. When a person files their tax return, the first one to get in the IRS system gets the refund. IRS doesn’t even check the W-2 information for “validity” until months later after folks have received a “refund”. Very hard to find the frauds as they quickly change addresses and they have refunds put a green dot card or loaded on a VISA card (not deposited into checking, etc).
Oh they won’t have to pay anything. They make up fake W-2’s using stolen SS numbers. They probably claimed 10 kids, Earned Income Credit, etc and will get a return of like 15,000.00.
An illegal alien I was familiar with had 38 aliases, and had over 100 stolen ID's & SSN's in his possession.
The government is literally laughing in our faces. They own you, your car, your home, property, assets, and accounts etc.
Pay up or else. And keep paying.

Retirement, lack of mortgage or other big interest loans, no complex investments, etc., all make one's taxes pretty simple to screw up. Most of the tax programs are pretty decent about catching some pretty complex returns.
They are LYING to you. My Wife is a UK Citizen, I got her a Green Card the LEGAL WAY, spent $10,000 and 1 1/2 years. Anyway when she got her NEW SS Number, she applied for credit at Kohls. it was denied and she got some real funny looks from the person at Kohls, So I ordered a copy of her Credit Report, turns out she was a middle aged Mexican living in Northern California, this happened at Tax Time so I did NOTHING ABOUT IT.
When we filed our FIRST Joint Return, the IRS Sent me a letter requesting Verification of her SS Number, so I sent it in, Homeland Security got involved immediately and within 30 days ALL REFERENCES to My Wife’s NEW SS Number were DELETED from EVERY CREDIT REPORTING AGENCY IN THE WORLD. Homeland Security Sent me a fresh copy of her CLEAN credit report
They can fix it if they wanted to, but they don’t. They only did it for me because they had to.
