Surely theres some significance in the fact that Leonard Nimoys death intersected precisely with the death of the Internet as we know it. And even if not, it might serve as a good opportunity to review another timeless intergalactic morality play about an Emperor who ruled the universe by fiat. Spoiler Alert: that one didnt end well, for the Emperor.
Death Star, proceeding according to plan
Butt enough about Star Wars. Today, in memory of Spocks departure from these earthly bounds, I thought Id dedicate the post to quotes from him and other characters in Star Trek a science fiction series dedicated to depicting the ultimate triumph of good over evil. So hold that thought: Good Will Out. Eventually.
She canna take any more, captain. She's gonna blow! Scotty
"Without followers, evil cannot spread." Spock
"We must acknowledge once and for all that the purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis." Spock
"They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. The line must be drawn here, this far, no farther." Picard
"Believing oneself to be perfect is often the sign of a delusional mind." Data
With the first link the chain is forged; the first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. Those words were uttered as wisdom and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. - Captain Picard, quoting Judge Aaron Satie
"Insufficient facts always invite danger." Spock,
Fascinating is a word I use for the unexpected, in this case I would think interesting would suffice. Spock
"Humans do have an amazing capacity for believing what they choose - and excluding that which is painful." - Spock
"Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Spock
Chang: "To be or not to be. That is the question that preoccupies our people, Captain Kirk. We need breathing room."
Kirk: "Earth. Hitler. 1938."
And although this quote is from Star Wars, the other science fiction franchise depicting the seemingly endless fight between good and evil, I thought I should wrap up with a quote from Ajit Pai, one of the minority Republican FCC Commissioners, after the FCC passed broadband rules regulating the internet:
Young fool Only now, at the end, do you understand. - Ajit Pai quoting Emperor Palpatine
21st century technology with 20th century bureaucratic rules and red tape: what could go wrong?
So even as it becomes increasingly difficult, remember always:

I watch this show like a hawk as I served on those WWII fleet boats back in the early '50s, and it sure does bring back memories. As a sonarman working the old W-2 gear (same as Nimoy), I was particularly interested in the ways the different actors portrayed using the gear and reporting what the contact was doing. Nimoy did a very believable job.
In fact, most all of the actors do a good job with an unfamiliar role. DeForrest Kelley (Doc) was in a couple of 'em as well, along with a raft of up and coming actors. A good show to watch, allowing as they had to use a lot of stock footage since everything was pretty hush-hush about their operations (why they call it "The Silent Service") and not much film was shot.
"They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. The line must be drawn here, this far, no farther." Ted Cruz
Nice catch.
They got that from Sherlock Holmes (or Arthur Conan Doyle).
Not sure it actually makes sense. Plenty of things are possible without being true.
The one I would use would only involve one finger. —
And NOT “Live Long”
And NOT “Prosper” ... I’ll bet?
Luke 16:23-31 (KJV)
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
