Freakout: The Media's Breathtaking Double Standards on Patriotism and 'Civility'
Townhall ^ | February 23, 2015 | Guy Benson

Posted on 02/23/2015 4:20:14 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Democrats and Republicans play by different rules because the media enforces those rules, and members of the national press tend to be liberal Democrats. During the Bush years, we were often reminded, dissent was the "highest form of patriotism." Over the course Obama's tenure, dissent became dangerous, disrespectful, un-American and quite possibly racist. When a conservative figure says something that seems to impugn or question a prominent liberal's character or love of country, "civility" SWAT teams are dispatched to knock down some proverbial doors. Such transgressions mustn't stand. But when the dynamic is reversed, the civility police are curiously off duty.

Which brings us to Rudygate. For days, the media elite have been hyperventilating into paper bags over caustic comments from a long-retired Republican mayor, who suggested that President Obama doesn't love America. (For the record, Giuliani's assessment was demagogic and unproductive). By virtue of another one-sided media rule -- which stipulates that top Republicans must always answer for every single Republican-involved "outrage" du jour -- Rudygate has magically morphed into Walkergate. The Washington Post decided to use precious time in an exclusive interview with Gov. Scott Walker to interrogate him about Giuliani's remarks, following up with the non sequitur question of whether he thinks Obama is a Christian.

(For the record, Giuliani's assessment was demagogic and unproductive true).

Fixed. Also, let me note that Guy Benson is a first-class weasel.

I’m not at all sure that “Walkergate” isn’t what Rudy intended. I tell you what though, this really does shine a spotlight on the hypocrisy like nothing else I’ve seen!

Thank you for posting this. This is one of the better examples of showing just how hypocritical the attacks on Giuliani and Walker are. The article quotes some of the more pertinent Democratic smears of Republicans, but the list is almost endless.

It is NORMAL for Democrats to question the patriotism of Republicans, and to liken Republicans to terrorists, fascists, Nazis, racists, Neanderthals, ad nauseum, without the media EVER raising the "civility" issue. "Civility" is a one-way street and the ONLY way to respond is to fight back and cite chapter-and-verse of the Dems doing the same or worse.

Someone need to tell the media to eff off.

Rudy Guiliani nailed it. If anything, Rudy did not go far enough. Obama does not like America and also does not like Jews, even though most of my tribe voted for him. :-I

And what about those calls for Pres. Bush George W. Bush’s assassination? Did they care about how supporters of Pres. W. Bush’s supporters felt when they heard that?

Back about 2004-2005, there was a guy at Seattle's major music festival (Bumbershoot, held on Labor Day weekend) selling t-shirts depicting George Bush being shot in the head. Not only was this allowed, it did not even generate any controversy!

Two or three years later, a local parade featured a flatbed truck with effigies of Bush and Cheney, and behind the truck was a guy with a wheelbarrow of rotten fruit, which spectators were encouraged to throw at the effigies. Again, there was no controversy, no calls for civility.

I voted for George W. Bush twice, despite entreaties from my relatives (also Jewish) to support Lieb the Heeb from the 1st election with Al Gore.

"Um... you do know you live in Seattle, right?"

Yeah (actually about a mile outside the city limits), but even in Seattle I thought that the city's official arbiters of civility (The Seattle Times and the local TV network affiliates) would draw the line at such blatant and offensive manifestations of incivility. But, no, not a peep. That was a real turning point for me, for better or worse. I used to highly value civility, but now I see it's just a game played with loaded dice.

The American people did not want to listen to those who denounced Obama's Marxist and Muslim background, and on the other hand, the media covered up Obama’s radical past ridiculing anyone who dared to expose the true Obama.

It really doesn’t have the same impact without hearing it the way it was screeched originally.

The left is completely immune to their own hypocrisy.

It is a mental disorder.

What’s striking to me is that they claim to own the high ground of “reason” while they attack the things they “think” conservatives do and ignore their own actions and heroes.

A serious disconnect that will hopefully come to a head.

Enough is enough already.

I agree about the Left in general, because they’re overriding principles are based on situational ethics, and they don’t believe in moral absolutes. “If it feels good, do it.”

However, we cannot let the media have such an excuse. This is because they proclaim they are not biased and stand guard as the truth-tellers of the nation.

This double-standard against conservatives needs to be wrung around their necks!

They are completely biased and do NOT tell truth to anyone unless filtered through the Leftist ethical machine described above.

It’s beyond me why the MSM can’t or hasn’t recognized the profit potential of the state they find themselves in.

They are all losing audience share and trust but still continue on their path to their own demise.

You would think that at some point the top Exec’s will need to answer for their dismal performance?

I could triple their share in two or three months and double that within the following year.

If I ran any of the alphabet soup news rooms I would dedicated a certain amount of time calling out, by name, the mis-reporting and under reporting of the other networks.

An all out media war !!

It would be a ratings bonanza !!!

A soap opera that is made for prime time.
