Sometimes, the best education is the one life gives you.
Students at the prestigious but liberal-leaning Cornell University found that out the hard way last week, when they stormed the office of school President David Skorton to protest a modern-day example of socialism at work.
On Feb. 5, Skorton posted a memo on the schools website notifying students that all who opt out of Cornells health care program next year will be charged a $350 fee, Fox News reported.
Obamacare requires all students to have health insurance, but those already covered are also forced to pay the opt-out fee. And theyre none too pleased.
Effective next academic year, 2015-16, we will be introducing a student health fee for those not enrolled in the Cornell Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), Skortons memo said. As a physician, parent and president, I am proud of our universitys long history of providing quality medical, mental health, education and prevention services on campus. These essential services play a critical role in student well-being and, therefore, success. Yet funding these services and creating access to them for all students has been a growing fiscal challenge, and a personal concern of mine.
About 150 students protested the move by staging an old-fashioned sit-in at Skortons office and a main administrative building on Monday, while others turned to 21st century hashtag activism on Twitter with the #fightthefee rallying cry, according to The College Fix student newspaper.
It didnt take long, though, for some who found irony in the situation to hijack the hashtag, including these tweeters:
Margaret Thatcher had it right, of course.
This is extortion and theft. All the intended consequences of Obamacare.
I would think if they’re covered under their parent’s insurance, that the parents would be the ones in an uproar.
Nuthin but rainbows and unicorns right up to the moment they figured out that they would be picking up the tab.
Dipshits gotta engage in dipshittery.
these geniuses come with out of state/out of network ins policies then pizz whine and moan because they get bills in the mail for services rendered and not being as smart as they think they are
That transition from Taker to Maker (and tax slave) can be a rough one.
“Dipshits gotta engage in dipshittery.”
I may have just found my new tagline.
Dear Conell Students:
About that guy you helped get elected in 2008 and 2012. You know he’s a imposter now right? He never was your “friend”. He just used you. Thanks for enslaving us and handing our country over to the enemy because he had “swagger” and was “cool”. You’ll be eating this the rest of your lives. Elections have consequences.
This may have taught them there is no “free lunch”
They’re freakin liberal idiots. I say let them eat cake! Lol...
“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” - H. L. Mencken
Time for some law fare. Cornell thinks they are going to make some money off the fee. Nome non-profit lefty NGO law firm should file a class action suit and force the University to spend all their potential savings on legal fees.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. What’s the problem?
They probably thought they were all exempt...Someone else would pay for them...
Meanwhile, those same students will go back to their nice warm dorms tonight and blame this all on Bush and global warming. And not one of them will see the irony in it.
Just because you memorize texbooks better than someone else doesn’t necessarily mean you are smarter.
Great meme Crip. I downloaded that one...: )
