A dozen people are dead in Paris after Muslim terrorists attacked the office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The attack was carried out because radical Islamists were angered over a picture of Muhammad was published by the paper.
The Editor and Lead Cartoonist were among the dead. A total of 10 staff members were murdered as well as two police officers. Five more are injured, and the gunmen are still on the loose.
Charlie Hebdo has published numerous satirical pictures of religion over a number of years, including those making fun of Christians and Jews. These pictures did not inspire attacks.
Instead, a picture of Muhammad ignited the cowardly attack. At the scene, the terrorists screamed, we have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "Allahu Akbar."

I never slandered Christians, I slandered narrow minded ignorant individuals.
Are you one of those??
I’ve got a strawman for you. So you’re saying that people who believe that old book, the Bible, are narrow minded ignorant individuals? That makes them similar to Islamic terrorists?
No, not at all. I never mentioned their spiritual beliefs,
just narrow minded ignorant bigoted individuals. Oh yeah, let me add bigoted to that list.
I don’t know about all that... I’m just saying you did exactly what he claimed.
It’s Paris.
Even the German Shepherds “guarding” the Louvre have muzzles.
Now if we could capture THAT on a bumper sticker....
Really? Because he’s been a freeper a lot longer than you.
“What exactly is the point of believing in a religion if you don’t think it’s true?”
And this is exactly the crux (no pun) of the whole stupid circular PC confusion.
This exact thing happened when my husband and I were taking intro classes at our (last) church. One couple kept apologizing for their Moslem and Buddhist neighbors, saying it would be unfair or offensive to declare that this is the one true religion (Christianity, specifically Lutheran). I got into the argument with your basic question. One cannot be a believer if one refuses to state that it is the one true religion. It’s simply foolishness.
Guess who ended up not showing up at church again.
Guess we offended them. (Seriously, I was just having a logical respectful discussion with them, as were the pastor and other entrants.)
He called for a zot of another established member out anger for his opinion... That’s how my comment was relevant.
There are some Freepers who think and spout at the top of their lungs that their religion is the only true bla bla bla.Christians are taught by the Bible that their "Religion", their God is the one and only true God, and the only pathway to Heaven.
Totally intolerant of others beliefs.
Maybe not kill you but will shame and try and discredit you.
That’s a very western way of looking at it. That’s our problem. We ascribe our Western morality to people who are completely different than we are. It’s pointless.
I understood and agree with your point.
Just trying to point out that belief that your’s is the only true religion is not necessarily associated with discourtesy, much less violence.
I believe my religion is true, which more or less by definition means I believe other religions are not true. But I’m a really nice guy. :)
I respect others’ beliefs (well, most of them) even when I disagree with them.
How is it cowardly? It's evil, to be sure, but killing innocent people at risk to yourself just isn't cowardly.
Courage is a virtue, and we generally don't like to concede any virtues to evil people. The problem is that this particular virtue can, and historically often has been, deployed in the service of evil.
The Waffen SS committed horrific atrocities. But nobody who fought them has even claimed they weren't astonishingly courageous. Same with the Japanese on just about every island we assaulted.
I think the notion you've got goes back to the old idea that bullies are always cowards. Unfortunately, it isn't and never has been true.
Bullies are often cowards, but by no means always. The world would be a much easier place to deal with if they were.
Sort of like some people that call themselves Republicans when they are truly RINOS.
People that call themselves conservatives but are quite liberal in their lifestyles.
Like some FReepers who say they are not racist and then go on to make jokes or statements derogatory to another race other than their own.
Call it what you will but there are many hypocrites on this site.
I should not have to show examples if you have been here for any length of time.
We do have the moral high ground, but not because the enemy is cowardly. We have the moral high ground because they do stuff like this.
Imagine a world where those who sneer at Christianity or Western Civ face similar risks.
Yet we are the ones who are the oppressors?
