The word, inconsciencia, can mean unawareness or obliviousness. It can also mean recklessness, negligence or heedlessness, that is, a person who acts without considering the consequences of his actions or considering what anyone else thinks or knows.
What did he mean in this context? Most of the Spanish blogs I have read took it to mean recklessness or heedlessness. Not a good thing in a Pope.

From the start I said to myself: Jorge, don't change, just keep on being yourself, because to change at your age would be to make a fool of yourself.
This pope talks to himself. Is that a form of Roman Catholic prayer? Is Pope Francis just his stage name now and does he still retain his Christian name Jorge as well?

He appears to be an optimist by his nature; seeking to view a void as a source of bounty.

Time for our daily dose of "what he really meant to say was ..."

Aw shucks it’s just ole innocent me.
That’s an endemic problem to humanity.

Pope Francis has also been 'gifted' with obliviousness.

The trouble is, the things we think are the most innocent, without being drawn up somehow into Christ, can end up being the source of a LOT of mischief. The fall of humanity may be a gloomy sounding tenet to some, but it’s the only one that satisfactorily explains why things keep seeming to go to hell on their own accord.

(1) It was mistranslated.
(2) It was an internet hoax
(3) It was taken out of context.
And my favorite (4) He wasn't speaking ex cathedra.

Putting it in the English vernacular, the Pope said that he is “out to lunch.” No doubt about that.

This Pope is the Joe Biden of the Vatican... I'm afraid it is worse than that.
He is the Obama of the Vatican.
Like Obama and Pope Francis, this country, and the Catholic Church won't be the same after their tenure.
And it won't be for the good of either organization. -Tom
