On Nov. 25th, a grand jury in Ferguson voted not to indict a white police officer, Darren Wilson, in the shooting of an unarmed teenager, Michael Brown, last August in a case that has stirred civil unrest and accusations of racism by white law enforcement officials. The next day, Steve Singer, a teacher in suburban Pittsburgh went to school and realized that he could not carry on as usual but that he had to address what was transpiring in Missouri. This is his account of what happened that day. Singer is a husband, father, blogger and education advocate who teaches eighth-grade Language Arts at a suburban school near Pittsburgh, Pa. He is an administrator with The Badass Teachers Association and serves on the Yinzercation Steering Committee. He gave me permission to republish this post, which first appeared on his blog, at http://www.gadflyonthewallblog.wordpress.com, where this appeared.
Singer teaches the academic, or middle-track students at his school. His classes are made up of roughly 70 percent minority students, and an even higher percentage of his students come from low socioeconomic status households. Not surprisingly, standardized test scores are low, but creativity, passion and critical thinking skills are high. Singer says he believes in every one of his students and would do almost anything to help them succeed....

Michael Brown has been dead for more than 100 days, yet he was in my classroom this morning. He stared up at me from the eyes of my 22 mostly black and brown students
So you are saying you have 22 criminals in your class? That is a little cold! I would be so insulted if I had a child in your class and you thought that way about him
It is no wonder his students have low test scores....
The police are free to use deadly force with impunity so long as they tell a grand jury they felt threatened by their unarmed alleged assailant
Okay done with you know. If youu have to lie to make your point them your point is wrong............
You conviently let out the testimony of witnesses and the actual physical evidence and the autopsy evidence... Shame on you.
I have no doubt some of them do.It’s like that idiot guy who got mugged by some black guy or something and was basically saying he deserved it. Probably got some perverse pleasure out of it. The fact he wrote an article about it says a lot about the guy’s mental state.
His lesson plan should have included the topic of “poor choices, poor life.” What you do matters to the kind of person you will become and the opportunities that will open up to you.
Too bad that these minority children are enabled in their dysfunctional life styles. But there is a model for the other way of growing up:
What do you call a poor black boy raised in a Detroit ghetto by a single mother who can’t read?
Dr. Ben Carson
I am beginning to wonder if Darren Wilson is evena real cop. Is this another Sandy Hook?
He serves the purpose of advancing an agenda.
At least they are now leaving out the aspiring rap artist, potential college student drivel.
This teacher is well out of his depth. Language Arts, previously known as English class, is not the place for current events discussions. In the 8th grade, with an acknowledged performance deficit, books need to be open to the lesson of the day that will lead to performance improvement on the next round of standardized testing. If this class can’t diagram a sentence, identify parts of speech, punctuate perfectly, and spell reliably enough to proofread, then this “teacher” is committing educational malpractice. I’d also bet his lesson plan for the day did not cover what he actually did and now his principal is complicit in the malpractice for allowing this free-form approach to continue.
I’m not really sure if the new ‘Common Core Curriculum’ teaches diagramming sentences, etc. I mean, why would any of the younger generations need that? /s
Spot on! You show great insight.
This problem is never going away... and it won't be for lack of trying. There is simply no effort given. Look at this man, he i dead. Raised in a dysfunctional household and by every reasonable account I've seen, they are either all gang members, or they at least go out of their way to emulate the gangster lifestyle. How are we supposed to be sympathetic when this lifestyle delivers it's predictable eventuality?
The only thing the black culture of illegal drugs want is a total hands-off policy. Then, they can run their illicit drug culture like the jungle they want. The good black families cower in the corner hoping they can raise their kids right while fearing for their lives.
Banal, liberal tripe. Teacher feel qualified to pontificate at the alter of political correctness. Never once was the underlying cause/effect mentioned.
The real agenda is the illegal drug industry. It is a culture advanced by the rap artists and the black leftists. You can also include Obama, who I was told, was involved with the Black Gangster Disciples when he was back in Chicago. I suspect that Obama has crack cocaine addiction along with his cigarette smoking. But all that is being kept quiet--just ask Larry Sinclair. The black illegal drug industry is the real agenda. Crack cocaine in every home. That's the ticket!
White guilt? No, no. It’s white ignorance. 90% of liberals place on the LEFT side of the Bell Curve. That’s why they are sometimes referred to as THE LEFT.

He as much as admits with this remark that he can’t see past skin color. People are INDIVIDUALS Mr. Teacher.
